About I've seen so many impressive really close macros that I thought I'd have a go myself. Unfortunately I can't GET that close with my camera/lens, so I chose a big flower. Same difference. This was a slightly weather-beaten hibiscus, but I think it works as a rather extreme macro.

Great shot. From the look of it, I do think this is a hibiscus.

Best of luck,

Thank you, George. Thanks for identifying the flower. I've changed the title and the "about" to suit the facts. As Churchill once said, "It's not that he lacks knowledge, it's that so many of the facts he knows are wrong."

An interesting corollary to my renewed enthusisam for photography in my present surroundings is that I have learned just a bit about plants and birds--things that before never held any interest at all. I do believe I can now identify 3 or 4 of each with some confidence. ;-)
