About An "improved" version of my previous upload. The distracting wood I removed, but the suggestion of cropping of the arm would, imho, spoil the "toughness" of the attitude.

Very nice, amazing eyes in this one, never seen any so blue before. Only thing needs fixing in my opinion is the shirt and shoulder on the right where it goes to pure white and no delineation. Just need a touch of tonality in there and you would have it I think.

Thanks.. the eyes are enhanced a bit.. while the rest is desatured somewhat to make the eyes stand out even more..
The blown-out part was unavoidable without turning it into a posed portrait which, for him, wouldn't work. Sometimes you just have to grab the moment and hope for the best...
That isn't to say that you're not right off course..;)

Really expressive portrait. I don't know if it's the heavy enhancement of his eyes, or just his look that makes it so expressive, but very nice. Also noticed the other picture of this and I have to say that this is quite a good improvement. The wood was indeed distracting, and this image seems to be more balanced in color. The stilistic whiteness really bring out his look in his eyes. Also has to do with the blue contrasting with white ofcourse. But well done.

This is a very good alternative. The desaturation has made the left and right more even. The image now has more impact.

Hi Gerhard,

Very good capture of expression and attitude, and a significant improvement compared to the previous one. I agree with you on leaving the arm; the bold, centered compostion fits well, and the body language is as important as the expression in the face.

The subdued tones also fit well, and although I would've selected a cooler blue tone, the idea of keeping the eyes in high saturation is very functional; it manages to attract the viewers' attention perfectly.

The lighting, including the blown out sholder is also very consistent with the feel of this image; a good example there's no need for a "perfect expousure" in every shot, in this case it only adds to the image. Reading Phil's comment, I do also think it's not quite needed, and the tonal range, more consistent with the right shoulder would've also worked well. Either way, to me, both ways are completely acceptable; the feel and expressiveness of this portrait are the key elements of this hoto, and both are very well captured. Very good photo.

Cheers,

Hugo

I didn't really tone it, but used a saturation layer to mostly desaturate every thing but the eyes.

Thanks..
