About Just trying out a Tamron 180mm F3.5 macro lens "out in the field" so to speak.

I managed to follow this bee in midflight and manually focussed - quite a challenge but the macro lens was very bright and clear making the focus "fairly" easy !

This is for Sqirl to show her what the Tamron macro lens can do :-)

Hope you like it ?

Hey Steve! How've you been? Capturing a bee inflight, and with a macro lens nonetheless! Pretty impressive! Far from easy, and you pulled if off beautifully. Good feel of motion by the blurred wings, and I love those details...

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks Steve, it's great :) Sorry I didn't reply before, I haven't been online.

I have to admit, you have a lot more patience than I do - I tried the "pursuit technique", but I got bored after 20 minutes of snaps of out-of-focus bits of lawn. ;)

Anyway! It's a fantastic shot. You got the focus absolutely spot on - no mean feat! This is a superb photo. If I can get pics half as good as this one, I'll be more than happy. :)

Take care, SQirl

Hi Hugo,
Great to hear from you - been pretty busy and lots of car problems unfortunately !
Over the moon with the Tamron 180mm and need to get the bee to turn around for me next time :-)
Keep in touch.
Steve

SQirl,

One thing I do most of the time with macro is to turn the lens to manual focus rather than autofocus.

For chasing "fluttering things" around it is the best way to do it.

The way I captured the bee was to stand still and let it fly past me - I was lucky as it stayed the same distance and once I had it focussed I just followed it :-)

Thanks for the tip, Steve! :) I must admit, I've already more or less decided to dispense with the Tamron's autofocus function anyway - I just prefer to do the focussing myself, especially with macro shots. I'm enjoying experimenting with different apertures and things, and I'm finding the autofocus just gets in my way a bit while I'm playing.

One thing I didn't think to practise was my pursuit technique. I'll have to work on that. I got a shot of a fly the other day, but it wasn't up to much because I think the fly was actually dead.

Take care, SQirl
