Hi John, Very cool elaboration on the straw themes. The red and yellow tones create a warm, radiating image, very good. The red interior of the straw, surrounded by the orangy yellow glow creates a strong point of attraction, wich benefits the composition and appeal tremendously. Very creative shot, one of the more appealing ones yet...

Maybe you could've gotten rid of the darker parts in the background by taking this shot a bit more up close, but that's barely worth mentioning. Just a tought, nothing more... Very cool stuff!

Cheers,

Hugo

This is truly a well-deserved awarded photo! It´s brilliant. I thought you´d been stealing lipsticks from your wife for your photoproject, and then it turns out to be straws:-)Great pattern and light.
Best wishes,

Hi Hugo! Here is a wonderful demonstration of the way in which UF can help the development of a concept. When I revisited this subject I had your previous comment on my image 'Straw Poles' in mind: "I think a bit more brightness and saturation would make it stand out more, giving it a bit more punch."

Well, I gave it some more brightness and saturation and it seems to have hit the jackpot! I always appreciate your comments but this time I guess you were spot on!

I did wonder about the darker parts in this one and could have removed them with a tighter crop, but at the end of the day this was my choice of composition.

John

Marcos Duarte   {K:15219} 5/8/2006

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 5/8/2006
John,

I love this! great great job! The balance of round shapes is so nice! that core in the offset center adds an amazing depth to the image, very much what you would get from an intense macro of a flower.

Very well composed, and great choice with the hair-line black trim.

Good Job! do more :)

cheers,
-Joel

Ciprian Ilie   {K:13215} 5/12/2006
Wow, two awards already on this one; I have to say John, this is particularly eye catching.

Excellent result, very colourful and some very good detail. I used to have this camera, but close up photography didn't really work for me, I could never get the subject quite so sharp.

Regards,
Ciprian

AJ Miller   {K:45790} 5/12/2006
Ciprian, many thanks for your comment. I also find that the A2 is not great close up, but have not had a chance to compare it with anything else. The first issue is that you cannot get closer than 25cm, and I have also had problems with sharpness. To get round this I always use manual focus for macros and measure the distance. I then check the focus with a focus card. Tedious, but it does seem to help.

.................CONGRATULATIONS..................

on this double award John and I'm sorry to be late in responding to this wonderful composition. My working hours are unusual and tend to spoil the pleasures of life.
The colours in this excellent creative study are beautifully exotic and your technique in acquiring this result is most interesting. Well done to you and very best wishes.....Ray

John Hatz   {K:148425} 4/6/2008
oh my God... how on earth I didn't see that before? well... that is amazing, the lighting makes these small straws makes amazing, especialy the two red into the deep orange, raelly a shot that looks like taken into a lab!!! haha... PERFECT!!! worths the award... hmmmmmm.... I think you must print that, it's really A FANTASTIC picture for a very modern house, believe me, I have an idea, you can print that in a plastic paper (with transperacity) and put it on a frame with lamps at the back... think about that piece of art into your house (or propably on many houses so people can pay for that...)
Amazing! of course favorite...
