About I'm not sure if this photo needs catchlights or not. I tried to put some in her eyes, but it always seemed to look way to fake. Any suggestions on how to do it with Photo Shop Elements 4.0 without it looking so fake. What's the secret?

I have some really bad news for you Sheila! I CANNOT critique this photo! The absolutely perfect expression on her face; the way the wind is pulling her hair from right to left across the photo. The composition is perfect!!Who needs catch light when you have a winning photo as you do here? She is gorgeous, and so is your work. Print it, frame it, and hang it on your wall! Stunning job! congrats
Darren

Wow, thanks Darren! The more I look at it the more I think I like it without catch lights in her eyes too. I appreciate you wonderful comment!

Thanks!

The tones, the expression, the composition...one of your best IMO, Sheila! I love this, and I thinks it's just fine without catch lights. You are improving by leaps and bounds! Excellent job!!!

Hi Sheila, I'd try to copy the entire image onto a new layer, and then set the layer mode to "soft light" (not really sure PSE does offer that function). It would increase the contrast a bit, which could also create the desired effect. Another thing is the way you converted this to B&W. If you used desaturation (or mode > greyscale), the results quite often looks a bit bland. It needs a boost in contrast and in most cases also a slight tweak in brightness. There are more ways to convert to B&W, and I usually use the Channel mixer with the monochrome checkbox checked. The sliders provide you with a more advanced option to tweak the tonal range.

Cheers,

Hugo

Personally, no catchlights required. The photo is nice enough but perhaps a little more contrast would help give it a lift.
I took the liberty of adjusting and also adding a catchlight but I think it's better without.

Catchlights and contrast

This looks wonderful the way you captured her. I am not often in favour of PS additions due to their looking a little false. Alterations to levels, contrasts etc are fair game if you know enough about it all. So back to where I started. You have a beautiful portrait of your little girl and high-lights are not necessary sweetie. I love the way her hair has been caught and I love too the magic of her gorgeous smile. A stunning child portrait my dear Sheila, well done. My very best wishes to you as always....Ray

Hi Sheila,
I have to agree with Kathy...I think this is one of your best! Forget the catchlights but, I also think a bit more contrast would make it even better! A beautiful portrait of a beautiful little girl...really great work.

Take care...Robin

Hi Clive,
I was watching this image to see if anyone would reveal how to add catchlights...you did a great job. Would you mind explaining how you added them? Thanks!
Susie
P.S. Sheila...I love it! Perfect shutter speed to capture the wind in her hair. Great post!

I love this.. she is a cutie! I love her expression and how you caught the wind blowing in her hair! I think this is close to perfect, I love it! I don't know how to do catchlights on PS either... but I think it looks fine without it! This is a great shot... I love the angle, mood, and everything else! NIce work :)
