This is wonderful in b&w Marcus! I don't think I'll ever get used to the details you achieve in your bird shots! Excellent!

Hi Marcus,
A nice change from the colour images... I know you wouldn't want to do too many this way because colour is so important when it comes to bird images. But, definitely nice for a change. I find certain birds lend themselves better to B&W than other do. The Terns for instance would also look great in B&W. Another thing you might want to try, just for fun is to try and tone one so that the toning represents the main colour of the bird. The Red Tail Hawks up here are a dark reddish colour mostly. It might be worth a try and see how you like it.

Hi Marcus, Notwithstanding your usually high quality and standards in bird photography, I'm not sure the B&W conversion is an addition...

Personally, I think if you'd increase the contrast a bit, and tweaked the levels to use the full tonal range, the photo would've been intimidating, but presuming you shot this hawk against a blue sky, I think the contrast added by the colour would already manage to produce the intimindating feel.

I think the light falling through the wing tips is spectacular, and if you ever attempt another close up type of shot similar to http://www.usefilm.com/image/1092493.html, I think such an abstract would be awesome, even in B&W...;)

As usual, the details and sharpness are very impressive.

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks Hugo, I realized that my attempt at a more dramatic scene through the use of B&W did not really have the punch I was looking for, The lack of contrast left my subject looking flat against the boring sky, which was a nice blue :) I guess sometimes we try things in which we think will be a nice change from the norm only to realize through talented eyes such as yours, and my own realization after the fact that the result I was trying to achive may have been possible through different methods. so should I try this again you have given me a new approach! much apprecated, but dont expect to see anything simular soon LOL. Its really funny how a photo can feel as though you achived your goal only to look at it the next day and say, wow I really screwed this one up..
Marcus.....

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185017} 5/3/2006
Hi Marcus, I can definitely relate to that feeling.... Sometimes I spend days before I'm finally happy with the result. Luckily that doesn't happen too often...

Don't think you screwed up here, though. It's all down to the finetuning, and it's nothing that can't be fixed.

Besides, it's also quite subjective, and onecannot argue taste.

Thanks for your reply, good to hear I'm not the only one with those experiences!

Cheers,

Hugo
