This was taken looking almost straight up at a 2" cluster of flowers on a very tiny plant. The trees, wall of clouds, and glowing sky made for a natural and organic backdrop when slammed out of focus from the very shallow DoF on the middle branches.
Trying to get as much depth as possible at very low light, I send the background deeply out of focus, and tried something something new that I learned from many of you here on usefilm.. a very thin trim of black to frame, and box the depths together. Took a long time of back and forth on width... and in the end, I kept coming back to this very fine box that is not as wide as the branches, so as not to kill the scale of the flowers. For the color of the trim, I used the a blend of all branch colors. I left the crop as it was shot, and that left a little weight on the left, but I kinda like it.
Once again, I am forcing myself to learn how to use ISO1600 to my advantage. I guess I like (and miss) the look of film ;)

Looks like a selective decolored or colored pic the way you've presented it here. Like the red on grey, but by using such a shallow DOF and low light, you end up with a real 'flat' image... the composition is good, but I'm not sure if you should take ISO1600 pics just because you can... if you know what I mean... MHO of course...

Not to my taste joel, (but who cares, right):). The dof is so narrow I'm having trouble seeing anything in focus. I guess that goes hand in hand with your liking a very grainy image, re the ISO at 1600. A pretty macro is just too simple/easy for you?
The composition is great, the bg is as you desired but it ain't going on my wall.
