It also has the feel of ballet dancers of looking down from the ceiling. feels amazingly precise but it isn't the first thing you notice.

What wonderful, wonderful detail! I keep looking at this one and I can't find fault with it at all, it looks better every time.
This is the second time I'm posting a comment on this one as I have a couple of questions:
Was the camera hand-held?
Was there any post-processing here to achieve the black background?
Last but not least try centering the image on the screen (mine is a 19", so there is plenty of room above and below it) and scroll up and down using the wheel on the mouse. You will achive a great optical illussion where the flower comes alive.

I did hand hold the camera. It was really bright, hard sunlight so that made it much easier.
Yes, post-processing created the black background.
Yes, it is a 'lively' little flower! L:)

This intriguing image is not only fascinating, but quite beautiful in composition. The cameo effect created by your black background was just perfectly placed.
