WOW, that is an awesome shot! The tones, light, and contrast are wonderful. There is enough of the chopper's blades showing that I can detect a slight blur, that hints at movement. Good job Doyle!

Thanks Laura . . . I had set the shutter speed to freeze those blades while it sat on the ground but apparently they sped up (duhhh) when he lifted off! I appreciate the comment though and I DO think that the slight blur in the blade doesn't detract from the image.

Hi Doyle, very powerful and dynamic photo. Great tonal range, too! I like the high level of details in the chopper, and the tilt really adds to the feel of dynamism. Very well captured!

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks Hugo . . . The tilt of the chopper was done right before the forward momentum was engaged . . . a thrilling moment to witness and several people there (there were a half dozen or so) mentioned that it looked like he did it for my benefit (which of course wasn't the case) - Simply luck and timing combined with my Nikon - The essence of all photojournalism!

Hi Doyle,

Fantastic picture. The B&W looks great. The machinery on the Helicopter certainly looks busy. It's a Bell 212 I think.

When Helicopters take off, the Pilot eases the joystick forward which tips the nose downward and slowly gives it forward motion. As the speed increases, the pilot eases the stick forward.

The helicopter eventually goes into what's called "translational lift", and pretty much rockets upward due to the air flowing over the main rotor. The pilot pitches the nose up a little once the transition is made. A fantastic feeling when you're in it. It's like a carnival ride. (I have a commercial helicopter license.)

The motion of the blades makes the shot that much better. Nice job. :)

Wow Terry . . . I appreciate the comments very much . . . educational combined with a "pat on the back" for me . . . and how unique . . . I have very few friends who know how to fly helicopters - (oh, wait . . .) I know NOBODY who can fly them! Congrats on your uniques skill and thanks so much for sharing it with me!
