Sacrificata all'arte.... :) , me l'immaginavo proprio così, e lo sfondo con il cielo ancora non bianco è perfetto. Gli alberi mozzi sono inquietanti, sembrano tanti mostri che le vengono incontro.

Il druido Max. Pero' che scenografia e che impatto. Sembra di essere a Carnac dove si dice sia sepolto Merlino, in Bretagna. Appena l'ho aperta mi ha subito dato l'impressione di un'ambientazione inglese, tratta da ciclo di re Artu' , oppure le raffigurazioni vittoriane dei pittori preraffaeliti. Veramente molto bella, spettrali gli alberi sullo sfondo, mi sa che devi ringraziare chi li ha potati cosi'.

Sembra una scena di un film giapponese degli anni 60-70 di gozzilla... mi piace parecchio. La foresta spettrale è un'ottima location... sulla modella non faccio commenti... sei infame e non si discute :).
L'unica cosa da rivedere un attimo è la mascheratura sugli alberi... è un pò troppo estesa tende a dare alone, stringendola un pò di più sarebbe stata invisibile, ma è una fesseria.

ti dirò che non mi interessava far entrare tutti gli alberi anche perchè i più vicini erano molto alti ed avrei sballato l'inquadratura, comunque ero al limite, di più non potevo arretrare, avevo provato il 28 ma era esagerato, forse mi ci voleva il 35 o il 40, ma quelli non li ho... ancora ;) Ciao, Max

Ciao!! Grazie del commento. Come dicevo a Marco, non volevo far entrare gli alberi nè potevo farlo, diciamo che è una scelta forzata, me n'ero già accorto quando avevo fatto il sopralluogo qualche giorno prima, sarei riuscito solo col 28 mm, ma lei veniva grande, anzi piccola, quasi la metà ;)

Hi Max,
I've been looking at this photo for a while now, and still haven't made up my mind what to think of it - don't misunderstand that as something negative, though, I'd rather like to see that as a positive thing about a photo, as it's intriguing, and triggers the mind. Needless to say that's something I always admire in a photo...
Yet, I think the photo is technically inferior to the standard you've shown before. That feeling is created by a number of things: the grain, the fairly straightforward composition, the fairly limited DOF, and also a bit in the focus and tonal range. Quite a few points, I admit, but all are also fairly minor
The grain on its own isn't distracting, and could even be seen as an addition, but because of the nature of the composition, it shows more in the upper part of the image. That doesn't quite fit the more slick appearance (or less visible grain) in the lower part.
The straightforward composition is probably the most ambiguous of these points, and I'll go into that later
A shallow DOF would fit this image, or a very wide DOF, I'd say. The choice you made blurs the trees only a little, but IMO not quite enough to create the distance nor separate primary subject from subsidiary subjects, making them look "just" out of focus, if you see what I mean. I think keeping it really shallow (not that difficult, the pentax 50mm lenses are great for that!) would only emphasise the moomd and atmosphere.
I think the tonal range is also quite ambiguous - it's well balanced, but there seems to be a shift in it; I'd like to see some more details in the model's black hair, yet it's perfect in the trees. The tones missing from the darkest parts are present elsewhere, if you see what I mean. The exposure and tones in the white dress, however, are spectacular. Then again, the tones in the sky seem a bit bleak again. That's also caused by the grain issue, and probably also by the DOF, in combination with the weather....
The thing that manages to grab my attention and appreciation of this shot is, next to the tones and structures of the white dress, the narrative element. Mixing a glamorous portait with a very strong feel, connected with an almost biblical element of sacrifice. Another very strong element is the combination of the scerenety of the models' experssion with the gloomy and almost scary feel of the surrounding environment.

The composition, which doens't really leave much to the imagination creates a rather bold, if not blunt appraoch. Very present, inviting the viewer into the scene. It's centered, both vertically as well as horizontally, and I think that's rather fitting here too. Yet it's also quite unsettling, as it doens't quite fit with the subtleties in this photo. Another great conflict, and another reason why it took me so long to make up my mind....
Another "imperfection" is, IMO the lower trees on the right, but that's very subsidiary, as that's also an element which is beyond your control, but looking at the build-up of the scene, could be dealt with if taken from a different PoV....
I don't think I've ever written a longer comment (read: Essay) on a photo, for which I do appologise. It just kept me going, which is the bottom line: An ingenious shot, with a vast array of contrasts in it... Even the image quality is somewhat flawed, but even that assists in this photo....

Hi Hugo,
I read your deep (as usual) analysis with great interest. I don’t have all the answers to your questions, for instance I don’t know why the grain has this strange appearance going from the top to the bottom )maybe the scanning process or the technique of developing, I’ll do some tries in the next days), but I’ll try to reply to your points.
The composition: I studied the pose of Roberta for a while before shooting and I made only one shot (I took only a dozen of photos in this session), the DOF and the centered position are wanted, I know I could have blurred the background, but this wasn’t my intention, I tried to involve the observer in the atmosphere of that place, the model, the rock, the trees and the mountains, but it did not have to be a scary photo, hence the smile and soft expression of the model.
The technique: I admit there are many flaws, not the grain, I expected this, it’s a HP5 developed with Rodinal, not a fine grain developer, for 10 min instead of 8, just because I wanted to compensate the poor light, but probably it was a mistake, maybe better overexpose and then underdeveloped. The main problem, as you easily understand, was the exposure. The ME is a wonderful camera, but I’m not comfortable to use it in manual mode (I like more MX for this purpose), so I used Auto mode, but in this way I have less control over exposure. The tonal range was very strange in every photo of the series, probably due to the lighting conditions, but also to the too much contrasted negatives. Anyway it’s clear I need more time to decently use films to get good photos, but this is also the thing I like more, never stop to learn ;)
