I love it when the sun pokes it's nose through the clouds on an overcast day. Unfortunately you usually have to be quick to catch the light. I love the lighting here, the village contrasts well against the gloomy sky. Well done.

selami Torun   {K:9239} 5/24/2006
Great light and composition dear Hugo..!!

Cheers,

Selami

Paul Lara   {K:77183} 5/24/2006
talk about horizontal lighting! This must have been seconds after sunrise, Hugo. This is very nice.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/24/2006
Hi Paul,

Very good call, the sun just peeked out above the horizon. I had a lucky break with the break in the clouds, casting the warm glow on the chemical plant. Looking east minutes earlier, I shot the previous image, quite a spectacular morning indeed....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Piero Somma   {K:13364} 5/24/2006
fantastic shot maestro hugo..it look terrific (pollution?)...i like light and proportion....good to study!
ciao

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/24/2006
Hi Selami, Thanks for your comment, much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Gerhard Hoogterp   {K:6468} 5/24/2006
What to say.. like the previous (where I only murmled, but didn't write:) wow..

If I would dare to comment it would be on the noise. As it seems the iso 400 is a tad noisy..

Markus Scholz   {K:22743} 5/24/2006
I doubt a bit the category most beautiful place in the Netherlands, but the image is excellent, Hugo. A great sky, the sun illuminating the refinery, just perfect.

Regards, Markus

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/24/2006
Hi Ashley, I agree, those moments require quite a lot of cooperation from the cloud cover, but if the cover breaks, the lighting can be outstanding, especially in the early morning... This was a very difficult day to shoot, as the lighting changed really fast, and the effect of the patches of light on the various parts all around me was awesome. Didn't know where to look....

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/24/2006
Hi Markus, "most beautiful" is obviously subjective. But yes, it's a bit over the top to call this vista "most beautiful". On the other hand, it's taken from the exact same location as in the previous one. (and the next one, as a matter of fact...) I'll change the about, thanks for noticing. Apart from the camera settings and a few additional bits of info, I didn't change much from the previous one.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/24/2006
Hi Gerhard, thanks for the feedback. I noticed the grain too, probably made more apparent when I tweaked the levels. I thought about removing it, but decided not to, as I didn't think it would improve anything.

It's great to hear "Wow" every now and then..., so thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Excelent picture!!! Great light!!!!

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:176790} 5/24/2006
hi Hugo..
this marvelous view of the Company plant and maybe petroleum refinery.. the light is remarkable, right one strongly points and saturates,..I then appreciate in a particular way the photographies in square format and with a lot of sky.. the adverse effect of those with a lot of earth.
They are always some particular points of view..
cheers
roby

Klaas  Baas   {K:15115} 5/24/2006
Hi Hugo,
breathtaking lighting in this one. I don't like chemical plants at all, but as you took it in this amazing light, maybe I started liking them after all.
I did like the other direction more I must confess.
Still a good one, as far as I can judge.
Regards, Cheers,

Klaas

Laura Spell   {K:24080} 5/24/2006
That is a dramatic sky! The colors and tones are excellent. Details are sharp. Looks like a Butane plant located here is Texas, lol.

wonderful sun lighting and very nicely captured of DOW Industry in Ellewoutsdijk.

Paolo Corradini   {K:50066} 5/24/2006
so unusual industrial sunsset..amazing light i love it like your square format! excellent!
PAOLO

Petal Wijnen   {K:47829} 5/24/2006
Fabulous sky... the colors are just wonderful, too bad it turned out somewhat 'grainy' by using ISO 400. Excellent composition and crop. Fantastic light, and photographed like this, even a chemical plant looks good... ;-D Neat shot... well captured, looks like a productive (punn intended... ;-D) morning!

Manu     {K:13015} 5/24/2006
Hi Hugo

I am a sucker for industrial chic...this really is one of my all time faves of your whole portfolio. Everything hits the right buttons - the hugeness of th shot, the spot light on the pipes and containers, the glorious hues and tones hidden in the clouds, the balance of the image...excellent!

And, as usual there is always the potential of a "but" - the noise in the sky...not sure if this works, at least I am asuming it is noise, you may have added the grain..?

But its a minor thing....many thanks, old friend, for showing us a part of your country not normally seen by the rest of us.....much more interesting than rows and rows of tulips, eh?

Cheers

Manu

Maurizio Massetti   {K:30272} 5/24/2006
Excellent dramatic tones, wonderful details here!

Massimo Di Maggio   {K:-56794} 5/24/2006
Very impressive shot! The composition is well balanced, I like the warm colors on the plant which contrasts with the coldness of the sky, maybe not the right place for a relaxed vacation, but certainly a very good place for interesting photos :) Bye, Max

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59796} 5/24/2006
You certinly make me think of the impressionists with this aquarelle alike shot, the pastel colours and the golden industry area. All the chimneys pointing up and the clouds stripe lying in horisontal lines - that is something i really appreciate!
Jeanette

Joggie van Staden   {K:41248} 5/25/2006
Oh yes!! Magic light conditions Hugo and as somebody commented - it can even make an industrial scene looks pretty. The layered effect in the clouds is beautiful. I agree with Gerard on the noise levels (but then at 1/8th sec at 400ISO and low light levels one can expect some noise). I suspect that you had to use the shadow/highlight tool to bring out some detail in the clouds?. Another great image in your portfolio. Regards.
Joggie

Don Loseke   {K:32500} 5/26/2006
A beautiful time of day. The low golden sun is wonderful. It outlines the buildings and stacks so well. You had a great sky to go with the composition. Don.

Nicolas Iordanou   {K:3313} 5/26/2006
You made an industrial site look almost romantic! Well done Hugo. All the best
Nikko

Jeroen Wenting   {K:24628} 5/26/2006
One word: dramatic.

I'd have expected a bit more sharpness from a scene shot at f/19 though.
Strong wind or hazy conditions maybe? Or JPEG artifacts?

Shane O'Neill   {K:3064} 5/26/2006
Hi Hugo,

This is a classic composition. Nice time of day to get the shot too. If I had any criticsm I would say that this imagery is very average for a man of your abilities - then again maybe thats a compliment in disguise!

Rgds,
Shane

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99493} 5/26/2006
Hugo:
I like this image. The colors feel appropriately saturated (I know you like well saturated color anyway) and the sharp focus on the plant pulls the eye right into the scene. The warm colors surrounded by the cooler blues above and below also work to make the plant pop out at the viewer. The red, diamond shape symbol on the right tank (a trademark, I think) seems to make the plant like a cohesive unit with similar white buildings and a corporate signature in the corner. Cloud cover, of course, adds a great dramatic aspect to the whole and the scenic image is elegantly presented.
(Seems like you done this kind of work a time or two before!) :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

João Tavares   {K:39114} 5/26/2006
Hi Hugo great photograph my dear friend...Excelent !!
regards
joão

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21809} 5/27/2006
This is indeed breathtakingly beautiful! The light and drama in the sky...the yellow of the towers ...the depth...altogether make it even a chemical fabric work beautiful and spectacular.
have a good weekend,
cheers,Ursula

Giulio Rotelli   {K:28375} 5/29/2006
perfect sense of composition and a great cut...
Incredible how you can make a great shot with such unpretty subject...

Hakan AKIRMAK   {K:14479} 5/29/2006
Great work Hugo! Colors are wonderful! Congratulations! 7++

Mohammad Reza Shahrokhi Nejad   {K:7076} 5/30/2006
Nice job,Hugo.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 5/30/2006
Hi Hugo,

you managed to capture a special lighting here from this kind of weird place =) the format and the horizontally repeating lines adds some level of interest. Overall, a fine view.

best wishes,
Thilo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/30/2006
Hi Nikko, good to hear from you and thanks for your thoughts.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/30/2006
Hi Jeroen,

I see what you refer to; JPEG artefacts are out of the question, though - I imported the RAW, saved as TIFF, and this is the first JPEG produced from that file. I think the level tweaking and (minor) layer work made the noise a bit more visible. It was rather gusty that day, too, but still rather clear.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/30/2006
Hi Shane, thanks for the feedback. Great way of phrasing...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/30/2006
Hi Doyle, sorry for the late reply, spent almost a week inside the studio, so no time to reply, let alone to comment...

You're right about the trademark: DOW - a plastic producer / polymer company. And you're right too, I've done similar things a few times before... Not only do I love this spot of the Netherlands (as remote as you'll find it around these parts) but also the type of photography. A few days later I went to that plant for a meeting...:) On the other hand, this is my first polymer plant; I feel much more at ease inside a steel plant...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/30/2006
Hi Ursula, Good to hear from you, and thanks for your comment. It's weird how beautiful such a view can be, isn't it?

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/30/2006
Hi Giulio, I guess it's all a matter of taste, industries aren't necessarily un-pretty, and I find them rather fascinating. I do think it can create a huge contrast in perception, thoughl.. Thanks for your comment!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/30/2006
Thanks Hakan!

Cheers,

Hugo

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21809} 5/30/2006
Indeed ! You say in a few words :)

marvelous lighting. outstanding. gorgeous portafolio. The best of Cuba the people. Very bad situation and very expensive. Cuba

Andre Denis   {K:55471} 5/30/2006
Hi Hugo,
I love your latest seascapes! They are truely beautiful. This one has that special enviornmental contradiction that makes it stand out. It always amazes me how a lot of photographers can find beauty in the least expected places and situations. Beauty is everywhere not just in the obvious.
Andre

Lubi Star   {K:3903} 5/31/2006
how very contradictive this image is Hugo... the sea (? or lake) along with the sky are nothing but soothing... various shades of dark colors give them a character of impending danger whereas the chemical plant is bathed in soft sunlight... almost ironic i might say... the compo is very well divided in making that contradiction have more impact... almost abstract but not as much as to loose its industrial character... and i personally adore industrial places... very well done...
Lubi

Anindya Maity   {K:6436} 6/1/2006
You've used the light magnificently

Ace Star   {K:20388} 6/1/2006
clouds did magic for this scene! really very interesting detial and atmospher :)
good work

wish you all the best

Randy Lorance   {K:24958} 6/2/2006
Interesting what the low golden light can do to an industrial scene, and as tall and large as the chimneys, tanks and steam stack are, what the large expanse of sky does to give them a diminutive quality. The large discharge of steam adds good touch of motion to image.

Randy

Nilanjan Mitra   {K:12136} 6/3/2006
outstanding picture.. with beautiful lightings.. excellent framing.. and great color.. everything seems to be perfect...

Bruce Harper   {K:5305} 6/6/2006
Amazingly different view to the previous one. Those great dark manacing clouds and the man made factory standing there in defiance giving nature the finger. Well thats the way I see it anyway, excellent composition Hugo.

Ferran Rial   {K:6724} 6/8/2006
Amazing light hitting the factory. Looks awesome against this dark and threatning sky. Good catch Hugo!

NN     {K:26787} 6/9/2006
Hi Hugo! Another great series ... very interesting to see what a difference some minutes/different angles make. I think this is my favourite of the three; love the strong contrast created by the smoke and the sky with its hues looks just divine!

Khaled Mursi Hammoud   {K:52309} 6/9/2006
Very nice factories line... I like the dramatic cloudy sky.
Nicely composed image my friend,
Khaled.

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:85570} 6/25/2006
The endless sea and the endless heavens, and somewhere inbetween some constructions made by human beings in their fight for survival. Like a colony in a deserted place, like a small artificial habitat in an endless and mighty world!

Excellent deptha and detail, Hugo!

Chris Hunter   {K:25631} 6/26/2006
Interesting how much the view can change so easily. The lighting and sky are still great, although I prefer the natural view a tad more.

Cheers,
Chris

Len Webster   {K:20916} 7/15/2006
Great! A real reminder of where the power behind our societies lies. Spent a couple of years in a flat with a view not so different from this - with that and the life on the passing shipway we never needed a television!

Best wishes, Len.

Jimmy  Piper   {K:5742} 8/13/2006
again, tones are awesome. great subject too.

cheers, hugo.

This is a beautiful and dramatic capture the industrial landscape. Nature seems to threatens the work of man. :) Andree

Two diametrically different pictures made just by rotation of camera on the tripod;
Zeeuws LichtI incredible nature, Zeeuws LichtII terrible pollution. Amazing work. It would be nice to see 360 degree picture of this place.
Greetings

This image is great, very effective light and well balanced composition...well done !

Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen   {K:55368} 3/26/2007
Good one that almost seems to show all the pollution we let up into the air. Amazing sky in many layers that get brighter the further up we go.
Best wishes
