Very beautiful shot, love the blue lights on the bridge, well done!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 5/31/2006
Thanks Susan . . . The wife liked the blue too . . . I, on the other hand, preferred the golden reflection in the ocean . . . Best of both in this shot. I appreciate your comments!

Thanks Marian. A pretty bridge it is but, to be honest, it's sooooo steep it seems kind of scary while you're on it. I have at least one friend who will absolutely NOT go on it.

Hello California Kid;-)
Another interesting image from California. I feel like I´m on a journey around the world every day because of Usefilm:-)
I like the blue lights on the bridge and the reflection in the water from the citylights. A city always looks very different when the sun goes down. Good that there wasn´t a blackout! I´ve heard that it happens from time to time. What about earthquakes and fires from the mountains? Does it feel like a safe place to live?
Sorry for all my questions. I just got curious!
Congratulation on the purchase of a Nikon for Marlyce!! I bet she´s happy.:-)
Best wishes from the viking of the North

Thanks again Kenneth . . . I appreciate the comment - I had taken several shots from 1/4sec to 8sec shutters. Each had their own appeal . . . like this with the headlight streaks coming off the bridge. Each also had their issues . . . like a moving cruise ship in one! Definitely a new experience for me.

Great night capture, dark area of foreground and blue lights of bridge give nice contrast and focal point. Nice space on top where lights trail off into darkness(and smog :).

Dear "Viking of the North" (as opposed to all those Southern Vikings) - ;) -
Thanks for the comment! The city IS very different at night. The lights here are soooo bright and numerous that one seldom sees stars! As it happens, blackouts are VERY rare (one in the last 12 yrs.) Earthquakes are VERY common . . . countless numbers. I was in the big Quake in SF in 1989 and the big Northridge quake here but most are not that big. Fires are even more common . . . EVERY year . . . but floods and landslides follow and they put out those fires. We jokingly refer to our seasons. Our weather is so uniform we really have only one season, late Spring to early Summer and 65 to 85 degrees along the coast (where I live) so we call it Summer season, Fire Season and Flood Season. But for the earthquakes which buildings have been built to withstand . . . there is no danger here. Except maybe crime. Ok, crime and traffic . . . but that's it! Ok, crime, traffic and Terrorism, but that's it. Ok, crime, traffic, terrorism and Republican politicians . . . oh, and fires and landslides . . . but . . . oh, never mind! I'm safe . . . I have a badge!! Earthquakes respect this!
All in all . . . it's mucher safer here than it would seem to the outside world (millions of people can't be wrong?).
Marlyce likes her camera VERY much and has already taken (though not posted) a huge amount of pictures. There is a learning curve but she learns quickly.
I'm with you, this UF feels like a world tour!

Thanks for commenting Randy. While it may seem to be smog; it isn't. We often have foggy conditions (lightly) even until noon. The coastal area is subjected to a very uniform off-shore breeze which keeps temperatures uniform and blows air pollutants into the city. Coastal California has very clean air due to this constant breeze. Once in a while we have what is referred to as Santa Ana winds, where the airflow changes direction. Then the temperature may rise as the heat blows in off the desert and airborne pollen, etc. causes issues to those who suffer from hayfever. Even then, though, coastal air quality is very good. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Doyle I <~~~~~

Hahaha! You make me laugh, you California Goofball:-)I can hear that you´ve many things to face in your everydaylife over there, but as you said millions of people can´t be wrong - unless of course the sun makes mass hysteria;-) At least it must have when electing Schwarzenegger for governor...;-))
I´m glad that Marlyce enjoys her new camera. Be careful- she might take tons of crazy shots that you don´t want to be uploaded to UF...
I´ll be off taking care of me and my family´s poor health.
Take care/ hav det godt,
Annemette

Brilliant Doyle- great to see it. All the lights wonderful to see and the blue. So gorgeous.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 6/3/2006
Hi Doyle,

The blue lights on the bridge really catch the eye here. Also, the reflection of the city lights in the low cloud cover create a very nice backdrop, very good nigh shot. It may be difficult to achieve, but reviving a bit more of the outlines of the buildings in the foreground might balance the photo a bit more. Minor detail, though.

Cheers,

Hugo

You were right Annemette . . . she took pics of me standing waist deep in the pacific trying to get a shot of a pier . . . and holding Nikki (my camera) up to keep it dry!

Hugo! The critiquing is back! Thank goodness. I actually had to stop the raw image down to lose some of the overexposure. I'll have to try again since I have almost NO slow speed experience and even less night shot experience. Thanks for the pointer! :)

Doyle I <~~~~~

Oh great cityscape Doyle!

I go to L.A. oh so often and this really brings back the times to when I use to enjoy the scenery ;)

Anyways Love this composition definitley a keeper.

Don't you love that smog? :)

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 6/15/2006
Thanks Ken . . . don't care for the smog . . . but where I live . . . a short walk from the Pacific . . . we have a continuous offshore breeze and NO smog . . . it's better that way for all concerned. Not really . . . but anyways . . . it's better that way for me!!

Doyle I <~~~~~

Excellent night shot of the Vincent Thomas Bridge and surrounding area.

Having lived in San Pedro all my life the Port and all the lights are beautiful at night, but the cranes during the day have covered a lot of the beautiful of the area - especially around the area of the bridge. Seems those cranes are taller than the bridge itself.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 7/20/2006
Thanks Lisa . . . and you're right . . a good view of the bridge is a tad difficult to come by.

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
