Well Rina
I am definitely not going the Mona lisa line, nor that you have lost your keys (LOL), or I am seeking matrimony - But te shot works well. However, personally I feel your arm is too high and tends to compete with your face. In fact I am not even sure you need the arm - I would have to see your other proofs. But the tonal quality, gradation, mood and cropping are all very good. But, I would give it a few more goes, even changing the lighting for more drama.

Hello my gorgeous girl....I've caught up with you and what do I find??? You have gone and promised yourself to Laurie, pushing me down into 79th position in the love-list:(:( Still, I can understand as you have probably caught sight of me in my latest bio pic:):):)
Seriously....I love this shot and you are everything that I thought you were and, having seen one or two earlier shots of you, you haven't changed at all. I love the relaxed pose, that very lovely smile and that gorgeous head of hair. The whole parcel is beautifully lit and converted into those lovely mono tones. Well done to you Rina for a first class job of work. Thank-you too for providing me with a picture of my beautiful, vivacious, sexy, glamourous, gorgeous, lovely, adorable, seductive, desirable and sensual Aussie Kiwi.....My very best wishes to you as always and a bear hug and huge kiss on those delectable lips. Hi Rina, Nice self portrait....I agree with the arm comments, maybe just a bit too high. If you had it rested on something so your head could be resting on it it would probably look more natural. (I think...maybe not...who knows?) Fun to play with. Oh, maybe try it with the other arm so the face could be tilted slightly toward the camera? Nice to see you! Gotta love those curls. Susie

I fel your control of light is already exceptional - I was talking more about experimentation and critique - goodness gracious, you are a very beautiful woman, but I hardly think making comments about the Mona Lisa or, losing your keys in your hair is going to assst you? What I am trying to say is that with a side on (or semi side on pose) often an additional impediment, like an arm is unnecessary - but do not cut it it off!! Besides you have beautiful hair and if I was taking the shot, that is what I would emphasise rather than an arm -LOL. I love the work you do and was just trying to be helpful. As for my work, please criticise away - I don't always agree, but I also learn a lot. Regards John

Hi RIna,
great portrait. what i think works very well, is that it's a single light source, and a small bit of bounce (from a table?)... and that you are aimed at the source. It lays a wonderful, classic look over the image that cast almost no shadow at all. Nicely done!
The crop... very tricky! I love that the frame you put it in, gives the illusion that you're in a window frame...with your elbow on the sill. ...well...that's how I see it :) very cool!
your stare has also been captured very well... you captured a moment of yourself, and that can take hours of wine and many trips to the computer with your camera.
nice to see you!
cheers, -Joel

Joel, excellent critique. I'm really grateful you've taken the time to really look at the techs here, as I was unsure about posting this fairly rough attempt. SPs are difficult enough to do at the best of times, let alone when you're under-equipped and it's your first go!
Some background for you: The idea behind this set up was specifically low light [kinder I think on ummm, aging skin...]. It was mid afternoon, skies were black with rain, natural window light wasn't going to cut it, so I turned on the lamp and pointed it in different directions around the room til I was satisfied with a position - basically hitting the wall above my head at a 45deg angle.
The really fun part came when I had to put myself in front of the lens! Since I don't have a remote either, the most delay I can get from the pentax is only 12 seconds!! Not a lot of time to think about about pose, didn't know what to do with my limbs! hehehehe... I giggle when I read that folk think I look relaxed. Relaxed??? Ha!
Yeah, so the crop was more or less to remove the knee from the comp. But I wonder now if it would have made more sense to the viewer, to have left it in... Still, I have lots more experimenting to do and more equipment to buy ;D
Thanks again for the awesome critique, mucho appreciated!!

What a beautiful young woman you are. This is very nice and soft looking. The lighting from the side is dramatic and causes such a angelic look. I wish your elbow was placed on the other side though so we could all see more of you. The 3/4 pose is a very appealing pose. Very nicely done. Kelly

greetings rina, you have the look of a bygone hollywood filmstar icon, its that gaze,i like the elbow on the frame, the ring in the curls, the lips however, look as though you have given them a gentle smudge, still, hey, what an image all in 12 sec, so well taken,. thank you for looking in & comments,. regards art,.

You look beautiful Rina. The lighting and work here has paid off well and the crop was a stroke of genius! The portrait doesn't show your sharp intellect and keen sense of humor though. And a mind like yours, in any body, is a wonderful thing.
Warmest Regards, Doyle I <~~~~~
PS: No arm. You don't have to lose it . . . just a different placement. Seems a tad unnatural posed like that (unless there's a drunken spiderman tangled in the hair . . .that's excusable since it would take more than 12 secs to remove)!
