About This is one of the first shots taken with my new lens - the Canon EF 50mm 1.4. Which I absolutely love!!!!! :)

very little was done to this image other than a slight crop and a auto levels adjustment. The bokeh is all lens.

Hey welcome back Laura. This is a great portrait, super detail and excellent dof. Glad you like the new lens. I guess you know why they call it the nifty fifty. Looks like you have a fine copy. Regards Ron.

I don't think that the lenses made this beautiful photo alone! I love that look.
Brava Laura (and after Canon 50)!
Cheers.

Giuseppe

No wonder you love that new lens, Laura...this is adorable! You captured a lot of feeling on that face...indecisiveness? Good job!

Thanks Kathy. You're right. He's just about to go into the gym for their end of year performance and he's definitely trying to decide whether that's a good idea or not :)

Outstanding selective focus. On my 1.4 the big problem is to keep both eyes in focus, as at close range 1.4 is too narrow. I really like your background, it tells a unique story. Good choice for a title as well. Not sure what that scratch is at the lower right, I would be tempted to clone it away, if you are so inclined.

Thanks for the comments Dave. I definitely need to practice with the lens to get used to the dof. This one was taken at about 1.8 I believe so it gave a bit more range. The bottom right is actually a little girl's hair and I will definitely clone it out.
Thanks!
Laura

An excellent informal portrait Laura, you have caught this young lad with a wonderful expression. Great tones as well. I too have this lens and find it invalueable with certain subjects and conditions. I hope you are keeping well as it seems like ages since we last 'saw' you. My very best wishes to you......Ray

An excellent informal portrait Laura, you have caught this young lad with a wonderful expression. Great tones as well. I too have this lens and find it invaluable with certain subjects and conditions but take care as it can be very unforgiving if mis-used. Welcome back my dear, I hope you are keeping well as it seems like ages since we last 'saw' you. My very best wishes to you......Ray

Laura Haw   {K:2696} 6/22/2006
Thanks Ray! Yes, I know I've been 'missing'. I'm actually still waiting for my Rebel XT to arrive (although I've been stockpiling lenses). My good friend lent me his again the other night so I took full advantage (and about 300 shots). I should have mine in the next couple of weeks and then you won't be able to get rid of me!

Formal school portraits are a pet hate of mine. This shot has caught the little guy as he really is (at least some of the time) and the shallow depth of field still allows the viewer to place him in his environment. It's a good shot, Laura.
Regards, Gary

Nice shot indeed! I like the background which gives me to feel the atmosphere and the same time is lovely focus-attention on the subject. Good job!
Best regards: Maxime

I really like the shallow dof. Well done.

Você, Laura, foi extremamente feliz na escolha deste tema. A infantilidade nos revela um elemento na fotografia capaz de nos trazer recordações de situações vividas por nós e que esquecemos. Parabéns por este trabalho. Wonderfull!!!:)

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:98945} 11/28/2006
Woooooooow! The quintessence of a portrait in the middle of the crowd! Wonderfully separeted from its background by selective focusing, and what a definition of an expression!

7++++++

P.S.: The Canon EF 50mm 1.4 is indeed a lens to fall in love with!

Marco Brivio   {K:14339} 11/28/2006
Splendid portrait with a very good use of the depth of field.
The expression of the boy is wonderful.

Excellent !

Radmila Gorjanovic   {K:3153} 11/28/2006
Wonderful portrait of child!
His expression is absolutely magic, and DOF gives wonderful effect.
Greetings
