It is only the makeup that she is wearing, her cheeks pretty much always look like that...I was surprised at how smooth her face turned out in the photo

Great skin tones and simple pose work really well.
I think her excessive rouge is a bit of a distraction, though.
you have a good eye for composition, and people are not much different than other subjects. Here is my short list of portrait tips:
- the softer the light, the better
- avoid on-board flash (except as fill light) as it flattens features too much
- use a tripod whenever possible, so you can engage your model in conversation, and get them to relax. THEN you snap the shot (with cable release).
- Opt toward wider f-stops, to blur the background, and make your model pop.

Thanks for the tips Paul, they will definitely help. I really only have been shooting people outside using natural light...these photos that i took of her were around 4 or 5 in the afternoon/evening, obviously avoiding the harsh midday sun. Most of the shots i took of her the background is close to her so i really just kept everything in focus so i used smaller f-stops, but i definitely try to follow using the wider f-stops when i can. Right now I only have a makeshift area in my basement that i use for a studio type setting, and lamps are really my source of light, so sometimes availability of light sources is an issue in my house, but next semester i should be able to get ahold of that kind of stuff, and maybe even buy one..but that is in the future. Thanks again for all the comments and tips.

You never know you could feel her firmness of her cheeks with your 'feelings' rather than recording by a senless camera!?
