About A wonderful misty morning at the memorial site of the sad and tragic Lusitania, I have included a mono version on an attachment as I continue to flounder in conversions and land/seascapes. Best wishes to all my dear friends.

This is an awesome sight. The curve of the rock cliff acts as a great lead across the image. I prefer the color version.

Robert Gaither   {K:30073} 6/25/2006
Nice capture and view. I guess I need to go to the ocean or mountains to cool off for its been very hot here. Excellent photograph.

Mary Slade   {K:40918} 6/25/2006
Beautiful Ray- full of life and I can feel the spray of that sea as it hits the rocks! Great angle- wonderful it is all sea- don't know how you didn't fall in! Textures and colours brilliant. (I like B&W too- I love to see the different moods and atmospheres.)

Jose Ignacio (Nacho) Garcia Barcia   {K:92514} 6/25/2006

I like the way the waves hits the rocks on shore adding a great life and action as an extra bouns to this wonderful image.

All of the best my friend

Sheila Carson   {K:5915} 6/25/2006
Very nice Ray. I like the black and white conversion too. It makes my heart race a little just to look at the photo. I feel like I'm about to fall into that water! Great capture!

Dave Stacey   {K:121052} 6/25/2006
I like your composition here, Ray! The ring of breakers around the rocks provides a beautiful contrast to the craggy shore. In this one, I like the colour version the best. Well done on both!
Dave.

vanessa shakesheff   {K:65070} 6/25/2006
Lovely capture of the waves crashing onto the rocks ..like the b&w too very dramatic..nessa

Don Loseke   {K:32503} 6/25/2006

Robert Kocs   {K:89061} 6/25/2006
I don't share you my version because I love both version.
But I prefer the sepia toned version, the details and
tonal range are superb and very expressive. The monotone
style my one personal style therefore I prefer this style.
Absolutely great point of view and exciting angle, very
well captured part of beach.

Have a nice day dear Ray!
Robert

Alessandro Capelli   {K:34256} 6/25/2006

Rina     {K:26896} 6/25/2006
Powerful, isn't it? Love the ocean. Love the roar, love the smell... love visions like this. Mind if I play with you? I mean... the image... play with the image! ;)

I recently came across a tip in the forum about using the channel mixer as a means to convert to b&w, and haven't looked back. Honestly, the results are far superior to desat or greyscale.

I've attached a rework using this method, and if you want the info on how to do it, check out Helen Bach's post to this thread: http://www.usefilm.com/Photo_Forum/1/1012658/

Now don't be put off, it's easier than it sounds, trust me. Just flick me an email if you want me to explain in-depth... or anything else you may have in mind... ;D

Hugs from your devoted WW,
Rina.

Like one old shipwrecked ship... Marvelous place. Well captured!

Yoshiyuki Tanaka   {K:13580} 6/26/2006
A beautiful waterscape, dear Ray! To tell you the truth I cannot choose, colour or monochrome (?)I find the angle very interesting and the texture on the rock very attractive. Also the movement of the water is fascinating, one can watch and watch hoping...it will start moving for real.
Thank you for your visit!
Best regards,
YT

Lynne Alexander   {K:419} 6/26/2006
Hi.. Is this a site you can easily return to? If it is try a slow shutter speed /tripod and maybe f5. NOT on a bright day of course. Your seascape sets a mood and even the color shot ( which I prefer ) is pretty monochromatic. It has a very nice feel to it. Thank you for sharing

stingRay part 2 .   {K:151379} 6/26/2006
Hi Lynne, I see you are a fairly new member to UF so first of all a big WELCOME to our great 'club'. Many thanks for visiting and for leaving a valued comment. I did a 3 series on this study including an f5.6 at 1/400th but I didn't like the water movement in that one. I might take another look at it when time permits and re-evaluate it.

I have just taken a brief look at your own portfolio and you have already posted some lovely work. You are, however, posting at a very small size so you need to amend your procedure. If you are a PC and PS user I can, if you like, send you details of how to maximise the size of your pics. My e-mail address is in my bio. Very best wishes to you hope to 'see' you again.

Riny Koopman   {K:61464} 6/26/2006
Hi Dear,Sorry for my lately comments to you,Iam very bussy with my work as you know,I prefer the the mono tones of this shot,Thanks for sharing this Beauty Ray..!!Greetings from the Netherlands,Riny

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185017} 6/26/2006
Hi Ray, Hope you are well. I like the top down view, a good overview, and a very well composed photo. It could use a little boost in contrast and saturation, but that's obviously subjective. Looking at the Sepia verison, I don't think the added mood makes up for the complementing hues in the original upload. I'd go for the colour version any time - also subjective, of course, I'm just not a big fan of monotoned photos.

Cheers,

Hugo

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100221} 6/26/2006
Stunning view and wonderfully composed Ray!! I just love this one (especially the color version)! The composition and the image seem to work however you choose to present them and I note that Rina's added bit looked great too! Just can't mess this one up. The only reason I prefer the color is that in a truly subjective viewpoint, the white-green foamy breakers are simply thrilling and have awesome color. Especially along the top-right side where the water is rolling. This is a true home run, my friend!! Very nicely done.

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Wonderful capture & Great angle
Great job my friend

Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 6/27/2006
Hi Ray,
I like Rina's version for the sepia tones, but I think I prefer the color overall. I think just a slight boost in levels would give it some more depth. This is a massive shot, I can almost hear the pounding waves....
Susie

Alicia Popp   {K:84964} 6/27/2006
Saluditos Ray, y felicitaciones, me encantó

Andre Denis   {K:56160} 6/27/2006
Hi Ray,
I assume you did not go for a walk on those rocks :) It looks just a little dangerous down there, to say the least.

To me the colour version looks a little better. I think this is due to the subtlety of the colour change. As you have noticed, when doing B&W, if you just do a straight conversion, some of the colours, although different when in colour, become almost the same grey in greyscale. You just have to do a little experimenting in your post processing (filters, levels, contrast, brightness) to see what works best for you to bring out some differences in the grey scale. Once you have found your method, I'm sure you will be very happy with all of your conversions.
Some images seem to just naturally convert into a thing of beauty... others take a bit more work.
Andre

jessie voigts   {K:6736} 6/28/2006
ray - this is so beautiful, with the action of the waves, and esp the still pools amidst the rocks. gorgeous! i can hear it. and i can also hear echoes of the lusitania, somehow. gorgeous. i def like the color shot. those blue/greens in the upper right, with the air under the crashing wave - incredible.

Gayle's Eclectic Photos   {K:91003} 6/28/2006
hi,i like this color version best because of the natural palette...my first love is classic B/W,but feel the sepia and B/W versions presented within the comments give it a very vintage look, which is fine if that is the look you wanted
...i had a little difficulty figuring out this view and decided it was because i have never seen this kind of formation at any other ocean i have been to...definitely a dynamic and wild sea scenic,Ray...interesting perspective with 2 nice diagonals...i get a strong sense of power and can imagine the crashing sound of the waves...
If were mine,i might tweak the contrast a tad and maybe do a weak sat boost...thanks for showing me this rugged coast view...
regards,gayle

Ciprian Ilie   {K:13218} 6/28/2006
I prefer the colour one; the monochrome has gone too soft and flat. This looks almost like an waterfall, it's making my eyes go funny.

Great, effective image.

Regards,
Ciprian

Alison DuFlon   {K:36231} 6/30/2006
Both shots are nice, this is quite dramatic, with the waves crashing against these jagged rocks. One can really feel the fury and movement. Alison

Marlyce Chastain   {K:4059} 6/30/2006
WOW. this is beautiful. Can hear the waves crashing and feel the breeze.

Khaled Mursi Hammoud   {K:52673} 6/30/2006
I like the colored version Ray....
Love how the rock breaks the waves... bravo,
Khaled.

Hi Hugo....many thanks for your visit and constructive comment. I too am not a fan of mono conversions but as the trend is towards dabbling in this genre I've had a go too. I am not talented in this technique....as if I care. Largely speaking I prefer to offer that which the camera takes with a minimum amount of interference from PS. I do recognise that some kinds of subjects are better represented in mono/sepia tones like, say a dramatic portrait. No, full-on colour for landscapes cannot be topped. Best wishes to you my friend.....Ray

stingRay part 2 .   {K:151379} 7/1/2006
Hi Andre....a late reply to you...I do so get behind that is why I limit replying to people's kind comments. Yes...we went walkies along this clifftop and it is the place where my right hip and leg gave way when I started to get up from the ground. Fortunately the ground sloped back and I went backwards rather than a distasterous frontwards. Thanks again for the advice regarding conversions. I think overall I prefer colour for my land/seascapesbut will heed what you say when I dabble next with portraits. Very best wishes to you my dear friend.....Ray

stingRay part 2 .   {K:151379} 7/1/2006
Hi Ciprian....many thanks for commenting...I doubt that I will attempt any more mono conversions in land/seascapes as I much prefer the colour versions. It was a very precarious situation looking down and along from the top of a cliff to this unusually shaped rock jutting out into the sea.......Cheers my friend, all the best...Ray
