About I've never uploaded a b&w flower before. For some reason this one worked for me. I'll upload a color version (a little different crop) in the comments.

Color Version

This works both ways, it's so interesting how different you view the same image BW vs color. Sort of like closing your eyes to better hear a sound.

This is great in b&w Kathy...the texture of the petals seems to stand out more in this version. Wonderful detail (including the bits of web) and a great crop!
Take care...Robin

Espectacular macro... me gusta la versión B&N.. las texturas están fabulosas.. felicitaciones!

Dave Arnold   {K:55649} 7/4/2006
Hmmm. I kinda sorta like the color version better. But that may be due to the frame. The bold black really takes away from the b&w and makes everything seem light. I think a white frame with touch of accent black lines may be better suited. (listen to me, the frame-challenged giving advice)

Now, can we get you back on your life mission? Capturing the barns of Madison County?

Best wishes

Dave

Wow nice entry into the b/w project. B/W florals just aren't that easy! ) This one converted really nicely.
Actually if you forced me to choose I think I prefer the color version, just because of the color variations on the stamens. (I think that's what they are called...) and the fact that I LOVE that purple color. But only if you forced me, of course.
Nice composition Sissy.
Give Sam, Nick7, Deb and Nick6 a big love for me tomorrow!

Kathy, para mí, la versión en color es superior y mas espectacular. La flor es color...y necesita la belleza del color para ser mas bella. Saludos de

You did the right thing Kathy. This could be about the nicest BnW flower I've seen. It work very very well. I can see why Susie would perfer the color but I think for me anyways I perfer the Black-n-white virsion! Another excellent shot
Kathy!
Thanks for sharing your vision of this beautiful
flower!

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!!

I can always find time to admire mono toned floral study conversions BUT I still cannot bring myself to do it. Love the colour of flowers, passionately. That said, you have done well with this conversion for it is excellent. The rich purple tones in the attachment seal it for me as that colour is one of the more difficult to capture....Well done to you sweetie, it's a very fine floral composition. My very best wishes to you as always.....Ray

This is inspirational, Kathy. I would like to try some B&W floral in the future! The B&W tones make one pay more attention to the impact of light on the tonality and depth. I think the B&W shows greater dimensionality.

Very good macro of this bloom. The stamen are tack sharp. The tones and lighting are good. I prefer the color version.

Dave Stacey   {K:121118} 7/5/2006
Both excellent shots of the clematis, Kathy, one of my favourite plants, BTW! I like the b/w one better though, because it seems to raise it from the "another flower shot", even though a good one, to another level, that I'd call art.
Dave.

brit warren   {K:1516} 7/5/2006
I like both but something about the gorgeous color just really pops out. I see what you mean about the b/w version though. Its shows lots of distinct qualities and detail that may be overlooked in a color version. Beautiful shot.

Alison DuFlon   {K:36231} 7/6/2006
Great crop and wonderful tones, like the B/W ut love the color one. Alison

Andre Denis   {K:56160} 7/6/2006
Excellent composition Kathy!

I may be in the minority, but I believe the B&W is the better of the two in this case.

Only one little tiny negative comment. There seem to be some sort of white specs on the petals that don't look as though they belong. Maybe a product of over sharpening? I have to open up the colour one again and see if there is something on the petals in the same area. Sometimes when you do a B&W conversion, what looks like dust or some kind of fault, turns out to be part of the image, just in a different colour.
Andre

Excellent Kathy. I have posted a similar picture in colour and now I too will try to see it in B&W.
Take care.

Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 7/7/2006
Hi Andre,
Thanks for taking a look and the thoughtful comment. I noticed the white specs, too. As a matter of fact I cloned some of them out, but it was something on the flower...not sure what. When I converted to b&w it happened like you said, and somehow they took on a life of their own!
Kathy

Excelente macro, una imagen onírica y abstracta.
Felicitaciones!

Very dramatic in black and white. Good conversion Kathy!

I'm so behind in my comments. I'm trying to get caught up, slowly but surely!

This is such a beautiful floral. I like the perfect contrast of the B&W, and this one is so crisp. I like B&W more. I am back for now before I go back to school, and I get to see your new work. It is all so amazing. Your photos always has that feeling of happyness or a certain feel of a place I would love to see. Always the best
Michael

Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 7/22/2006
Hi Michael,
Thanks for your encouraging words! I haven't been posting much on UF...time has become a commodity and something had to go! I'm sure you understand. I hope tht school goes well for you, and...keep shooting!
Kathy

Mary Slade   {K:40918} 7/30/2006
This is wonderful- so unique. The textures and the shapes so striking. I like both- colour has a different atmosphere and both so clear and beautiful.

György Szönyi   {K:8347} 8/10/2006
Beautiful BW tones, excellent details, fine frame. Best, Kathy, Gyorgy

Ash     {K:9400} 8/23/2006
Wow! I never think to try a floral shot in black and white, I usulally can't see past the colour. I am really glad that you have. You have stripped away the colour and shown the true beauty of the shapes in the flower. Very well done.
