About Not your average Thursday when you find out that your brother's wife is about bring her first child into the world.

My Sister in-law, Anya, and Dante being held by a new Grandfather.

Very low light at sunset, and just lucky that Anya's hospital room faces south west :) Family portraits are new to me, so had to study a bunch here on UF before heading to the hospital. Tomorrow, I'll bring the tripod, but try not to look too much like a geeky photographer, when i'm spoze to be an Unkle. Expect more like this, as I gotta get good when it's my turn to have a kid :)

Such a beautiful story. I like the way the mum is watching what is going on. Nice work. Cathy

Oh, Joel, what a lovely image! So tender! You've captured the moment well!

Cheers

Phil

Shirley D. Cross   {K:140920} 7/22/2006
This would be tender even without the background story, but that makes it even more special, Joel. Look foward to your others.:)

Funny- when I saw the full set the other day this is the one I liked the most. Got a kick out of your Dad's expression (which you can see even though in background blur) in the Dante/Alan stare-down. Congrats to Mike and Anya and welcome to dante. Expect to see many more!

d00d:

Spectacular shot. The lead in view from the mother in the lower right draws attention back to the wonderful DOF of the grandparent and child. The honesty and expressions here are stunning. I think this is definitely one of the best shots you have posted.

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 7/24/2006
Thanks pops!

Yeah... big Allen is very happy to be a G-pa'. This is the one picture that everything looks to be at peace.

many more on the way!

Howdy M-feak,

thanks you so much! I'm so glad you dig this one.
It's the family favorite also. I'm going to need more printer ink, and another trip to IKEA for frames.

I was working so much with composition, as I don't take images like this that often.... all learning... all the time. The hardest part was that freakin light ..time to get a faster lens :)

Thanks so much for your awesome review and comments! Sorry i've been so busy... i wanted to get you comments on your new images over the weekend...but time got yanked away, as you can imagine. hope all is well.

cheers,
-joel

J-Phreak:

Hmmm, 3D la la land for you.

I had the same problem, and was shooting a wedding this last week. My solution was the 50mm Nikkor 1.8 AF. Sha-wh33t!

I'm sure Canon has the equavalent 50mm prime lens, and what is nice is you can get them on the cheap. Maybe raid Davey Jones's Locker to pay for it.

Nickname it Stubby or Shortie, but it gets the job done.

Ron Wilson   {K:18161} 7/28/2006
Nice shot Joel and congrats on becoming an uncle. I like the expression on grandpa, a tad uncertain, and on mom who looks a little relieved, pleased and unsure all at once. I don't know how you can't look like anything but a camera geek when you will be setting up the tripod at the bris, haha. Regards Ron

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 7/29/2006
Howdy M-

A friend at work loaned me 50mm 1.8. Thanks so much for the tip! I love the 1.8... and turns my camera into in ultra light-weight shooter. So use to the boat anchor lenses!

cheers,
-joel

Hi Joel! This image almost makes me want to be a mother again, LOL. I like your choice of focus - the mother - and how she is looking at her newborn in the arms of the proud Grandpa. A precious moment, so well captured. Congrats on the well deserved awards!!!

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 8/8/2006
Thank you very much Manu!

Roger Williams   {K:82682} 8/9/2006
A lovely photo, Joel. Great start on family portraits. I love the way mother's face is sharp but everything else gets blurred. Wait till you have one of your own! Awesome... with great photo opportunities (baths are fun--but be sure to get yourself a nice inexpensive filter to protect your lens). Some tie plastic bags around their cameras...

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 8/9/2006
Thanks so much Roger!

...plastic bag... brilliant idea :)

cheers!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 8/15/2006
Hi Joel, Outstanding photo! So very expressive... The feeling and human emotions are perfectly translated into imagery, quite impressive, both in moment of time of the actual event, as well as in the way you managed to grab that moment. I might've said this before - can't remember, but forget those remarks: THIS is your best photo yet...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 8/28/2006
Hugo,

Thank you very much! I'm so glad that you're able to pick up the tone of the image. Very kind comments!

I've been *so* insane with work, and a looming deadline in a few weeks. ..so your comments came at a very good time! :)

The family loves this image as well.. so I guess I'm on the right track!

Hope all is well, and look forward to having a few hours of catching up with all of your new images!

cheers buddy,
-Joel
