About This man etched peoples' purchases at the famous Waterford crystal showrooms attached to the glassworks. He is seen here inscribing something onto a crystal mantle clock for Heather and I that we wanted as a keepsake.
I have posted a bad conversion 'cos I think it belongs in mono tones in some respects. I have also attached the colour version which, of course, I prefer. Feel free to play with the levels, do dahs and wotsits.....I will be taking a lot of time out soon to see if I can come to grips with everything I've been told.

very great hand craft image, very great exposure , composition , details , contrast and tone.

My friend, your photography is very pleasant for me to view and very interesting to learn from.

Wishing you all of the best my great friend

Dave Stacey   {K:114933} 8/3/2006
A good view of the craftsman at work, Ray! I can't really decide on which I prefer, but I'm leaning toward the b/w!
Dave.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99493} 8/3/2006
I like it Ray! Very nice composition and the artisan here apparently etches freehand. Awesome concept as one artist captures another artist working on another artistic piece. The conversion looks very good to me. While I do like the color . . . it has the dark image in the upper right corner which is a slight distraction and has been eliminated in the B&W . . . making the B&W the stronger one IMO. But even were that not to be the case . . . I think this is one great B&W composition with a good tonal range and it's pleasing to the eye.
Very well done my friend!!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

I like both B&W and color, Ray. You've left me wondering what you've been told...

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59907} 8/3/2006

Jeanette

Leo Régnier  Я£   {K:62830} 8/3/2006
A perfect B&W study my friend!! Congrats,
Leo

Larry Fosse   {K:65767} 8/3/2006
My you're busy today Ray....excellent capture of the workmanship going on here....good choice of B&W...a little more contrasty might work well

Petal Wijnen   {K:47829} 8/3/2006
Looks like that wasn't all that cheap... did you have to pay per letter (I count about 16 euro in the case where his other glasses (hey even more glass... ;-D) are in). Like the B&W version, good tones... well done!!

Susie  Peek-Swint   {K:5035} 8/3/2006
I think both are great versions Ray ~ the B&W seems to show more detail but I like the warmth of the original.. I visited the Waterford factory many years ago.. fantastic work even from the apprentices.. I'd never have the patience! Best to you, susie

Alicia Popp   {K:82471} 8/4/2006
qué lindo reloj... para el escritorio??? qué curiosa eh? ... no puedo con mi genio!!
Felicitaciones Ray. estupenda foto!!!

Roger Williams   {K:82679} 8/4/2006
I like the colour but agree that the B&W looks better. However, I do think the B&W suffers a little bit from overall softness. This may be simply because available light forced you to use a slow shutter speed (camera shake) or a very wide aperture (limited DOF). But B&W is merciless in, er, "exposing" such weaknesses. They are much less obvious in colour...

Jose Ignacio (Nacho) Garcia Barcia   {K:91154} 8/4/2006
Magnificen in B&W. wonderful details. Great shot. 7

Mary Slade   {K:40918} 8/4/2006
This is brilliant Ray- both versions I like to see. Went there every year so I am very attached to it! And it is wonderful the way you got a picture of somebody working the glass. To capture the craft like this is wonderful.

Laura Spell   {K:24080} 8/4/2006
Well composed documentary photo. I prefer the color version, the monochrome appears to be low on contrast.

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 8/4/2006
Hi Ray,
A very clever Glass project entry. I count at least three areas where glass is included in the shot. It his watch strap was turned around you would have had four.
Andre

An interesting image my dear, very different for you..I prefer the colored version as well. I think it's excellent, very nicely composed with very good clarity.

My dear sweet Ray, I am sorry if someone hurt you. I do not know what happened, but I know that there are some people who think that they must say something negative or they are not helping. GAWD I would hate to have them in my family and certainly as a parent...yikes. I have only started photography about a year ago, and I have grown so much, not by the negative, and so called constructive comments, but by viewing the photography of others and by listening to the wise and well chosen words of those that are good at it. You are very good at it, and I do understand time being a factor. It is very difficult to do anything for yourself when you spend so much time commenting. I know, I used to comment from morning until night, the good part of that was I was exposing my brain to a lot of different styles and techniques, extracting what I liked, leaving behind what I didn't...so it's good, but not all of us can afford to do that, even I can no longer do that. We have to have time for ourselves too, and I can't even imagine how you do what you do when you are working too. I know I'm rambling, I guess the biggest thing I want to say is that I feel bad that someone made you feel bad, if that is the case, and to let you know that I am your friend. Big big hugs to you dear!!

jessie voigts   {K:6601} 8/4/2006
impressive!! i love it! i like the B&W, and also like his glasses case, with the cash in it.

Robert Gaither   {K:29197} 8/8/2006
Looks fine to me. Excellent image.

Kes     {K:18269} 8/12/2006
Hi Ray, I think you made the right choice. The color shot has more "life", but there is something about the B&W that brings it to the top. Perhaps it makes you look at the lines and shapes in the shot?

Best wishes Ray, hope your health and all is well,
Kes

Asim Roy   {K:9701} 8/20/2006
I like your B/W version than colour, and am waiting for your next shot under category of Glass, love, asim

Sometime I think it is a kind of blessing observing still such kind of work of arts surviving in our societies.
The imagination of his job not easy even though the result is always applauding from everyone in everywhere!
I guess it is a wise decision you’ve decided for B&W illustration. It is a kind of classic picture which shows the real atmosphere in the B&W-image I suppose. I adore the viewpoint of the picture. I am able to feel the focus and sensibility of the job!
Best complement for idea and composition dear friend.
Best regards: Maxime
