Robert Kocs   {K:89061} 8/12/2006
A very well composed asymmetry, love the different
texture and forms. Excellent vision with a rusty
spiral. Nice natural abstract, nicely done dear Nigel.

Have a nice day
Robert

What I like most about this image is the juxtaposition of chaos and order. What may not be apparent at first, though, is the that the 'order' comes from the most chaotic part of the image, and the 'chaos' comes from the most ordered. Less you wonder about my sanity, let me explain.

The chaotic part...the tumbled beach pebbles...are the most ordered part of the composition. Similar in color and texture, they create order by virtue of their uniformity. In contrast, the orderly spiral (looks like a rusted spring) creates chaos because it is unexpected. The spring is out of place, that is, it is unexpected in a bed of beach pebbles.

Your composition rocks (sorry for the pun)...you took advantage of the rule of thirds. The lighting is even, without hot spots or negative space. All excellent.

I have one very minor nit regarding the small white spot in the upper left corner. I'd recommend cloning it out.

I also looked at the companion shot for this one, with the larger spiral form. I like this one better...something about this composition appeals to me more. Maybe it is the relationship of the spiral to the rest of the frame, I'm not sure yet.

Anyway, great work!

Nigel, way to go. I really like Mary Sue's description of why she likes this photo. It's the way I feel about it as well, put in more elegant terms than I am able. In my opinion this is reaching to a next level of photography, a level to which Freeman Patterson aspires. Imaginative compositions are all around us, though only a few seem to find them. I find it inspiring how you have made something unique from the ordinary.

James Cook   {K:36725} 11/3/2006
