Doyle, this is a great capture of this bud, great detail. IMHO and mine only I find the gold outside frame does not seem to help, the inner frame works, but I'm not one for frames.;) :)

Fair enough Cleveland and thanks for the comments . . . my thought was to get the sparkles from the bud echoed in the frame (though I couldn't do it too close) . . . but I wanted the separate frame just cause I thought it was cool. I'm sure you're not the only one who'll not care for the frame . . . :)

Excellent macro, magnificent details and framing, beautiful composition

Best regards

AJ Miller   {K:44247} 8/23/2006
The detail is fantastic and the colours very subtle - a really impressive macro.

But since everyone else has been so kind and because I'm a miserable git, I'm going to make two very niggling observations:

- I think the DOF works very well from the foreground to the background, but I am less happy with the way it works from top to bottom. I would prefer to see the bottom of the bud in focus also. Actually, thinking more about it, I think I would like to have seen a little more of the bottom of the bud (perhaps even a short section of stem) since if the whole bud was in focus it might appear truncated.

- There appears to be an intruding straight line (spider's web?) on the right side of the bud that distracts from the curves.

There, I've had my rant for the day, so everyone else can relax!

All the best,
John

Hanggan Situmorang   {K:37782} 8/23/2006
SPlendid details and DOF, Doyle. Very nicely framed and composed, too. Great work, my friend.

John:

Thanks for the serious critique. I'm seeing what you're speaking about concerning DOF from top to bottom but I just don't think it works that way . . . it just appears to work that way. The DOF is a fixed distance from the lens and a fixed depth . . . I know of no way to control the height independent of the width . . . since the lens is circular. The DOF is extremely narrow due to the use of extension tubes and it subsequently caused the appearance of a vertical DOF . . . which I suppose could have been controlled by removing some (about 12 to 20 mm) of the extension tubes. This would have deepened the DOF and brought more focal area into the field without seriously affecting the focal clarity. If you note in the gap between the center and right-side holding pod leaves . . . the blossom petal itself has some in and some out of the DOF . . . and loss of focus there too . . . though minimal.
I completely agree with you that bringing the entire bud into focus would require the lower section and/or even the stem into view . . . something that would have been useless without the requisite focal depth since even the lower section of the bud-holding leaves are alreading fading into the BG due to the DOF.

The line is a spider's web . . . to clone, or not to clone . . . that is the question! LoL!

John . . . I still love the critiques and the fresh eyes do give me a fresh look at my work. You're ALWAYS welcome to nitpick, er, . . . I mean constructively critique . . . my work! :)

Now I'm off to look up the definitions of "Git" and "niggling"! :)

Just gorgeous. What a close up. The textures and colours- so real and beautiful. I like it framed like this- 3d to me.

Linda Bique   {K:73877} 8/23/2006
Beautiful floral Doyle with a delicate and lovely composition, the reds and greens are wonderful. I like the fuzz, very well captured, and the presentation is great too..well done...:)

AJ Miller   {K:44247} 8/23/2006
"I'm seeing what you're speaking about concerning DOF from top to bottom but I just don't think it works that way". I was assuming the lack of sharpness at the bottom was because of the curvature of the bud ie. the bottom of the bud was further back (further away from the lens) than the top and centre. But thinking about it now, that would have left the top of the bud soft as well. Did you crop the image at the top?

John

PS. You may need a UK dictionary for those particular words!

Marian Man   {K:64170} 8/23/2006
so beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you!!!!!
Marian

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/23/2006
Thanks Mary! :) Another vote of support for the frame, eh?

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/23/2006
Well thank you Linda . . . :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/23/2006
Nope John . . . it's just at a deceptive angle with the top tilted towards me.... No top crop but perhaps a side effect to look for in the use of the extension tubes . . . again . . . assuming the angle is as remembered - it has been a some time now - especially if you measure time in pictures.

A UK Dictionary? I have Oxford's. I will just assume "Git" means gifted analyst and "niggling observations" means those constructive critiques applied to brilliant compositions. It's easier than actually looking it up! :) Uhhhh . . . so Thank you!

Doyle I <~~~~~

doyle - love it (except the frame. i'm a purist, hate frames). you take such amazing photos, esp of these flowers so closeup. i can almost feel how soft those new petals are.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/24/2006
Thanks so much Jessie . . . I love having you make comments on my shots because they really help my faltering ego - :P LoL! You really are very kind. As to the frame . . . I KNEW some wouldn't like it . . . but . . . I'm a guy . . . and the frame is SHINEY! Sparkly objects easily distract me!! LoL!

Well Doyle, I have just spent over an hour on your portfolio. All I have to say is Wow, you are sooo good. Not only is your work beautiful and exacting it is so interesting. Your Birds are beautiful, from the Black Swan to the Flamingo's to your Parrots. Your Flowers, Macro or ortherwise are beautiful to look at. even the dead ones that you so aptly made beautiful as well.
There is nothing ordinary about your work. You are on my favorites list now and I can't wait to see what you come up with next. You are an inspriation to us amateurs.

Maurizio Ubaldini   {K:1629} 8/25/2006

Wow Linda . . . (I'm speechless . . . and that's no easy task for me! LoL!) Thanks Soooo very much for the wonderful complement and that you would spend so much time looking at my shots is even MORE valuable to me than any award!! Absolutely the kindest thing I've heard the entire 65 minutes I've been awake today!! LoL! Great way to start the day anyway! And . . . PS . . . I'm just as amateur as you guys . . . believe me!

Best of wishes,

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/25/2006
Thanks Marcus . . . you old pro you!! Why do I feel like you could have gotten this same clarity if I had launched this bud from a slingshot?? Meantime . . . I needed a windbreak for the gentle wafts of ocean breeze just to stop any and all movement!! You'll have to let me know next time you give pointers to the incoming group of National Geographic photographers so I can take notes! ;)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Chad Parish   {K:6155} 8/25/2006
Nice photo Doyle, this is the type of shot I am striving for with my own floral shots. The detail here is amazing and the tones perfect.

A beautiful macro floral! Perfect cropping and framing! Lovely blurred nature green as background! I adore the presentation and colours!
Best regards: Maxime

Sheila Carson   {K:5830} 8/26/2006
I'm surprised that this one hasn't won an award yet! The details are amazing and I just love the soft colors. Great job on this one!

Ciprian Ilie   {K:13215} 8/26/2006
Fantastic delait and superb DOF. The only thing that would have made this better would have been to just a bit of the stem in the frame too. Otherwise superb, sharp and well executed.

Regards,
Ciprian

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/28/2006
Hehehehee . . . I KNEW you'd appreciate it my tequila photographing friend!! ;)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/28/2006
Thanks Maxime . . . Using the 105mm macro and some extension tubes to narrow the DOF helped immensely. I appreciate your support!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/28/2006
Thanks so much my good friend . . . but you and I BOTH know some amazing, outstanding shots never win awards! Here . . . the learning and recognition from other VERY good photographers (like yourself) are worth even more than the awards. When we do manage to score an award . . . it's very nice. But to get the respect of some other brilliant photographers is, in many ways, even nicer. And of course . . . the learning here, more than in some stuffy classroom, is even more valuable! Take care my friend!!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/28/2006
Couldn't agree more Ciprian . . . but the 60mm Extension tubes and 105mm Macro made the DOF too narrow and the subject too large. My alternative was to sacrifice detail or try to stitch together two images (Ooooooh . . . there's a thought!) :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Sheila Carson   {K:5830} 8/28/2006
You are so right Doyle! Wait, should I say that again? My husband always likes me to repeat myself when he's right so- You are so right Doyle!

:)

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/28/2006
Heheheee . . . Thanks so much Sheila and I think if you asked your husband you'll find it's not necessary to say it twice IF you put it in writing!! ;)

Best Regards my Friend,
Doyle I <~~~~~~

Yashar M. G.   {K:601} 8/29/2006

Great macro Doyle - beautiful colour and details, lovely green background - very well taken! (the outer frame a bit distracting though). Regards
Joggie

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 9/5/2006
Thanks Joggie . . . have no fear . . . I knew the outter frame would bother many people . . . but couldn't resist! ;)
