A most impressive low key portriat! I can say nothing but good things about it. Wonderful contrasts with the rim lighting. Fantastic expression on the face of the model. A great composition and so well captured and presented. A superb "clean" image with a story to tell! Congratulations for having had this pic chosen for Best In Project. You deserve it!

Warm Wishes,
Aniko :)

Beautiful portrait and I like as you have taken with the light the essence. Shadows add atmosphere very intense.
Best Congrats for BIP.
regards,
Tommaso

Hey Phil,

I agree, this is a great shot. The subtle lighting, outlining the low key figure and only sketching the pose sure creates the feel of the new project. A calming mix between intimacy, secureness and rest...

My only nit is that I instinctively am looking for a bit more space on the left of the image. Undoubtedly my shortcomming, looking for the obvious, known expectations in composition...

Cheers,

Hugo

PS: I dig this new project...:)

She appears to be kneeling in prayer. She could be at peace for her faith, even if she is troubled by things for which she prays. There are some faint smudges here and there, as if it were shot though a pane of glass. But if viewed on a darker monitor, the highlights give just enough of the form to make you wonder about her circumstances and story.

Virgis Dromantas   {K:4199} 9/3/2006
There is great moment seen and captured, dear Phillip. Dark tones work very well for this photography. Congratulations on well deserved award!

Kind regards,
Virgis

Joe and others thank you for the kind comments. This was actually shot in a portrait class I took a while ago. Learning how to shoot low key photos. The light was an old Mole Richardson fresnel aimed at the floor and bouncing back up on the background, black paper with the spill over lighting her face. It was shot on tri-x film that was over exposed and under developed. The girl in the image was one of the other students, sorry not a person in actual prayer. I just asked her to look somber and let her know what I was trying to achieve which from your comments I guess it worked.

Sorry bout the smudges, my monitor was probably too dark to see them. This was actually a scan from an 8x10 real darkroom print and there must have been some fingerprints on the image or on the scanner glass.

Thanks again for the comments,

Phil

A very peaceful image, Phil! Serene, calm and restful. At the same time, I feel the image gives of a slight melancholic feeling, which I find interesting! Well done, mate!

Cheers

Phil

PS Phil, please take a look at Graham's work. I've brought him over to UF from an Australian site that we both belong to. I love his photos!

Wonderful intimate and snug portrait, with natural light that creates a 3D effect on the face of the woman. Best in b-w, good details and atmosphere.
