Hi Marcus, what is amazing here for me is the harmony between the bird and the background, seems as if the shape of the edge-line of background was done on purpose- and exactly matches the shape of the bird! Did you do that or just a pure luck?! Great job with lovely colors! Best regards, Pawel

Radmila Gorjanovic   {K:3153} 9/12/2006

Thanks Pawel, I timed this one perfectly! NO actully there was too much folage here, so I had to take out some of the distractions in the foreground and to the left.. thanks my friend..

Beautiful image Marcus. I would be thrilled but it seems to me to be a tad softer than usual around the neck (for your work). Love the foliage framing!!

Hi Marcus,
Another beauty!

I know I've mentioned this before. I just have to say how much the out of focus branches framing the bird improve the over-all image. They really add a lot of depth to the shot, compared to a plain blue or grey sky background.

Have you tried taking shots of interesting out of focus backgrounds without a bird in the image, then placing the bird in from another image that has a plain single coloured sky?
Probably a stupid question?

Andre

Marcus Armani   {K:35759} 9/13/2006
Thanks Andre, I do agree with you, I have always had many shots with the bird coming out of the trees to the blue sky In which i always posted the blue sky shot as I thought it looked cleaner, Now I do the opposite, when there is no choice I try to enhance the background when possible..
Take care..

Marcus,
My wife and I were walking in a semi-wooded area on the weekend. I had my camera around my neck, but not turned on and ready. One of these surprised me by coming up from a low down bush only about 20 feet in front of us. He didn't look to be in much of a hurry either. I wasn't expecting to see a Hawk so low to the ground. So, I'm still batting zero for decent shots of this kind of bird :)
Andre

Dave Stacey   {K:120344} 9/13/2006
Another wonderful capture, Marcus! Beautiful colours on this bird!
Dave.

Alicia Popp   {K:84586} 9/13/2006
Estupenda imagen, el ave en vuelo da mucho dinamismo a la imagen. Los colores preciosos, encantador plumaje. Felicitaciones!

Marcus Armani   {K:35759} 9/13/2006
Bill you are already posting some very nice shots, I think you only need to fine tune your skills and your right there! I wish you could come out here, I could have you right there with yamil and I. well its a open invitation yamil can teach you all that I taught him, and i can teach you all that I have not LOL..

Marcus Armani   {K:35759} 9/13/2006
You know Andre, If my first hawk sighting on any trip out shooting were my only one I would never get a shot as Im never ready. Typically I find a spot and see my first raptor before i get my camera setup and ready to go.
I have had many times where i decided to go here or there and my first sighting was the best or atleast seemed that way, for me they seem to fly much slower when i dont have my camera ready, when I do they seem to be buzzing around like a federer serve!

Andre Denis   {K:56141} 9/13/2006
Hi Marcus,
I understand exactly what you are saying about how slow they seem to move in between the time when you don't have your camera ready and the time you are ready. There must be some kind of perception in our brains that slows down the events that we want to photograph. But only if we don't have a camera handy:) I always joke with my wife when she asks me if I'm bringing my camera along for a hike. I say what for? If I take it we won't see anything:)

Still, as you point out, planning is half the battle.

Jason Mckeown   {K:20134} 9/15/2006
another fantastic capture marcus the colours are great, the DOF is perfect as usual keep them coming my friend

Yamil Saenz   {K:12373} 9/16/2006
Another stunning image Marcus.
You keep rising the bar.
This is one of my favorite angles. Here you can appreciate the fascinating anatomy of this majestic and elusive hawk.
Today the volunteers from the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory counted 689 raptors of 13 different species- average 115 HPH.
I am planning to be there by 10:00 AM.
Please let me know if you have some extra time.
Take care.
Yamil
