About Flaming Grecian Cheese - waiting for this tastey appetizer to burn out - not a work of art, just a reminder of how good it was.

Burning brandy? I like the way the blue comes through.

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 9/26/2006
Not sure about what type of alcohol they use; maybe brandy or sherry? Thanks for commenting.

James Cook   {K:37073} 9/27/2006
I saw a really cool flaming blue shot glass here a long time ago. I've been thinking to try something similar. Probably use brandy, cognac, 151, whatever. We'll see.

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 9/27/2006
To shoot as a photo or to drink? Could singe your lips.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99842} 9/27/2006
Better than the Poop Pic!!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 9/27/2006
Thanks... poop is not everyone's cup of tea. (Can't believe I said that!)
This one is just a reminder that I need to get over to Dimitri's every now and then for a fix of excellent Greek cooking.

Hanna Segal   {K:13469} 9/27/2006
your flames look very pretty and I bet the result was quite tasty (I love Greek feta, too:)

Marlyce Chastain   {K:4059} 9/27/2006
Like this one Jan. Do me a favor.....check out a member with the name Jerrad (my son). I only say this as I see you were military.

Riny Koopman   {K:61125} 9/27/2006

Marlyce-- thanks for the tip on your son's photos. I have seen a few pix posted coming from overseas but not many. He has a couple good pix here. I did two tours in Viet Nam and Cambodia from 68 to 70 with the First Air Cav as a forward observer and rememeber the isolation and loneliness (as well as other emotions). So, given that, I can identify with him and what he sees on a day to day basis.
I will keep looking for new photos that he might post and will keep him in my thoughts.
-Regards, Jan

Opahhhh!...think they use ouzo. Love Saganaki...
Great capture of the flames Jan, I can hear the sizzle.
Thanks for the comment!
Take care...Robin

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 9/27/2006
Thanks for viewing and commenting, Robin. Makes sense that they would use ouzo. I would look up recipe but I know I will never make it; eating it is my only clear intention. May slip out to Dimitri's for lunch today.

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16434} 9/27/2006

WOW, that is amazing! I have never eaten 'flaming cheese' of any kind. Must have been an exciting dinner! lol

Paulo-- thanks so much for viewing and commenting.

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 9/27/2006
Laura-- it was a great dinner but I could barely walk out of Dimitri's the last time I was there. I went a bit overboard. I shared the Saganaki with two others, ate an entire order of stuffed grape leaves and then polished off a dinner of Moussaka. Only the Saganaki was on fire at the table but portions of my anatomy were on fire later that night!
--Jan

James Cook   {K:37073} 9/27/2006
To shoot it with my camera not as a shot. Very bad. Say a film of some dumbass doing that. Caught his face and mouth on fire. Someone had to throw a beer on him to quench the flames. Although, it would have been nice to have been there with my camera ready. Hahaha.

Michele Carlsen   {K:140115} 9/27/2006
I think it is a work of art and there is food too ???? Wow! I love the hypnotic spell of fire... I think this is a wonderful composition, I like it very much Jan...

the flame looks great : )

well done

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 10/4/2006
Rob-- I am pretty sure the recipe is easy to make assuming you don't mind risking burning your kitchen or dining room to the ground.
Thanks for commenting.

Chuck & Donna--Thanks for your kind comments.

stingRay part 2 .   {K:148553} 10/9/2006
Beautiful colour tones to this one Jan in amongst the dancing flames. A good photographic opportunity well taken. I see you are a fairly new member to our little 'club' so a big WELCOME to you. Keep up the good work. Take care, hope to 'see' you again.........Ray:)

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 10/9/2006
Ray-- I appreciate the welcome and I really enjoy usefilm; I have had a lot of constructive comments and "how to's" that have helped me immensely. I think this forum is unique in that it is an international community that gives a broader range of perspectives and backgrounds. Also present are the weekend snapshooters all the way to obviously very accomplished advanced amateurs and professionals.
Thanks for the kind words.

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:98829} 10/25/2006
I am a Greek, so perhaps I will consider it as a work of art for this reason? ;-)

seriously now, it is always very hard to capture a flame with such a high definition of texture and colors like you did. This photo could be one of the illustrations in some book about that restauerant, or even about greek cooking!

Excellently put in scene!

Nick

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 10/25/2006
Thanks for the comments, Nick. I wonder how you would react to American versions of Greek dishes and whether they would be the "real deal". This particular eatery is second generation in the US and are Greek but you'd think that sometimes the recipes might be changed to meet the American pallette or based on available ingredients.
Some day I hope to visit your country and eat my way through some major food places.
--Best to you, Jan

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:98829} 10/26/2006
Hi Jan!

Well, I guess that this happens everywhere, everytime. The same happens here where I live in Switzerland. I am comfortable with that, since it is a part of that kind of exchange that happens when different cultures meet. A mixture of the elements, if you like, that can have very good results, be that food, habits, anything. People approach each other, look, choose, take and give, creating that plethora of tastes. And though I sometimes will miss the "real thing", I must say that the swiss version of saganaki is not bad at all. So, I guess my reaction to the American versions of Greek dishes would be, wow! I don't know that this way, but it's good! More of it! ;-)

If you are going to visit Greece some day, you could be also excited by the Greek version of the good old apple pie.

Best wishes,

Nick

P.S.: And wait until you hear the Greek version of Rock'n'Roll. ;-)

Paul Lara   {K:81508} 11/17/2006
OPA!
Hopefully you enjoyed a glass of Retsina as well.

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 11/17/2006
Thanks for viewing, Paul-- am almost ashamed to admit that I was drinking "PEPSI!, PEPSI!".

cliff hanger   {K:1381} 1/3/2007
cool shot, i like the way that the flame must have been changing so much that you couldn't have known what the photo was going to look like! thanks for commenting on glen dog, he likes you!

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 1/3/2007
Thanks!!! You are correct about the not knowing; I took several shots and viewed them on DSLR screen until I got the one I wanted. Took in busts of three. Back at you and the pooch.
--Best to you, Jan

Sam Andre   {K:12556} 1/22/2007
Thae pictire is as good as it tastes :)

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 1/22/2007
Thanks, Sam. Trust me on this: the dish was better than the picture! It was delicious. There was a guy in my party that night that thought he was supposed to dip into the dish while the flames were still going. I should have allowed him to try and taken a picture of that. :)
--Best to you, Jan

Albert Jacobs   {K:9450} 5/3/2007
Hi Jan,

Wonderful and colorfull play of the flames. I like the contrast against the black burner and background. Really an invitation for a good hot diner. Well done and it's great when you can combine this with a nice diner. Compliments !

Friendly greetz,
Albert Jacobs:)

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 5/4/2007
Thanks, Albert. The food tasted much better than it looks. :) :)
--Best regards, Jan
