Hi Dave - Very interesting backdrop although it draws attention away from the real subject. I have not tried this myself but based on trying to freeze movement of waves I would make the following suggestions:
Go for ISO of 640 or less
Rather use a black backdrop
Shutter speed 1:1000/sec or faster
Use studio lights if available and/or flash
This is a question of the blind leading the blind - lets hope its towards the light! Regards

You have captured it nicely. I believe increasing the shutter speed might help with the clarity that you expect. The bg is a bit disturbing IMHO.

Hi Dave,
I agree with the rest here increasing the shutter speed will probably sharpen things up. As it is, it looks like a painting. Nicely composed and the flare in the middle of the water is cool.

Interesting experiment, Dave!!!
I have never done any kind of a "plop" shot, be it apple or otherwise, so I cannot advise.
Just wanted to say it is interesting, and that it must have been pretty difficult to shoot.
Who dropped the apple... or how was it dropped?
I am not very imaginative right now. If it were me, I would have needed to ask someone to have a barrel of apples and give a signal when to drop each one, fervently working my camera using different apetures and shutter speeds. Then I would have torn my hair out waiting for the lab to develop and print the film... I still refuse to go digital... hehehe....
I ramble... lol... oooops...

Thanks, Ani. Lots of trial and error here. At first, I held the camera and dropped the apple. Dididn't work too well, the lens was too close and kept getting splashed.
Next, I used this backdrop, a tripod and a remote release to get this shot. The backdrop is terrible as others have pointed out.
Then I went and found a black backdrop but soon lost my light so those pics were just terrible (I will be posting one of those photos in this string, though, shortly)
My BIGGEST problem is that my fruit-eating, fruit-stealing doggie kept stealing my apples between shots. Here's a picture of him grabbing one. Crazy boy, I've never seen a dog as nuts about fruit, though he prefers pears over apples.

Hi Joggie and thanks. I must confess, your recent "strawberry drop" photo spurred me to try this on the spur of the moment. That is why I really wasn't prepared with a proper backdrop.
I did however find a black backdrop after this series with the woodgrain background. But none of the pictures of the apple and splash came out as good. Here's a picture using the black backdrop.
I agree, the woodgrain experiment just didn't work out.

Thank you, Cessy. I appreciate your input. I was using a shallow baking dish. I like how the blue reflection on the water turns out from the dish itself but I am trying to figure out what to use instead. I'll keep playing.

Thank you, Udit. I agree about the background, too. I did use a black backdrop (and posted a photo of it in this comment string). Unfortunately, none of the black background photos were as dramatic of a splash and the blurs were just too bad.

Good attempt, Dave. I like the vibrant colour of the apple, the star in the water and the shape of the splash.
I feel you could stop the motion of the apple a little more, and change (or blur) the background.
So I would go for a lower ISO but much higher shutter speed. Since you don't need much DOF you can open the aperture up quite a bit. This could also help with blurring the background. Summary: ISO 200 - 400, F4.5 - F8, 1/1600th or faster.
Then again, I've been dropping things into water for about a year and still don't think I've got it quite right...

Dave, regardless...the shot came out great. Think most of this kinda stuff needs to be shot with a strobelite to get positively frozen action. I've taken a strobelite and set up this shot before also. It's fun to use a whole role of film and simply hold the shutter open while rewinding the film at the same time for multi-images on 1 piece of film without any frame breaks. Your experiment turned out well. Keep em commmmmin'

Thank you Laurie. I must admit that is what I miss most of no longer shooting film, the multiple exposure on a single frame. That method you describe sounds great. I've never tried that.
