Excellent work Rui. Tony

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 11/7/2006
These signs here in LA - flashing of gang signs and organized (loosely) alliances usually end in horrid tragedies. Innocent deaths ... and the worst part is the children flashing these signs and encouraged to do so are not seen by all as being innocent . . . so their shootings and deaths are considered somehow less tragic. The child in this capture would be shot if he did that sign in the wrong place here in Los Angeles . . . and it's a tragedy. This shot makes me feel bad . . . but is done well.

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Mike  Adams   {K:7180} 11/7/2006
I agree with Doyle on this.
Yes it is an excellent shot but wrong place wrong time and that kid would no longer be with use.
For a kid this young to flash this is sad!

Massimo Di Maggio   {K:-55858} 11/7/2006
Fantastic capture! I like the gesture and the expression. Abraço, Max

Rui Palha   {K:13851} 11/7/2006
Doyle, happily I am not in Los angeles, but in Lisbon. Here this sign nothing has to do with the meaning in L.A.... for that It's called "street signs"... it doesn't have to do with gangs signs, but with street signs and it means... "you are a horned one".
The sign of the gangs is not like this, it is very different... one day I will put a picture with a picture with signs of the gangs (thug life... it is as they call it) for you see the difference...
I hope, after this short explanation, you don't feel so bad seeing this photo.
The kids were kidding one another and this one call the other "horn"...that's "street language", no more than this.

Regards.

Rui Palha   {K:13851} 11/7/2006
Once you are in agreement with Doyle it will be better read the answer that I gave him...
Probably you will change your opinion.

Rui Palha   {K:13851} 11/7/2006
Thank you, Massimo.
I can see that in America the meaning of gesture is different from european meaning...
:-))

Mike  Adams   {K:7180} 11/7/2006
Gldad that you clarified that!
I always like the shot it is just that was kind of a shocker!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 11/7/2006
Thanks very much for the clarification Rui!
Gestures . . . even words vary from place to place and I'm sincerely glad to hear this young man is not on his way down the wrong road. Harmless child's play . . . GREAT!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 11/7/2006
The funny thing is Rui . . . even knowing the truth . . . it's hard to get past the photo knowing what the sign has done here and how many have been injured or worse. I still get a chill seeing the shot!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

kike Calvo   {K:11291} 11/7/2006

Usually it's the purpose of the photo journalisme.
To show the real life...and this one isn't so "beautiful" as we would like it would be.
I suggest you...never see any exhibition of World Press Photo...It's true, but hard.
Regards.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 11/7/2006
Oh Rui!
Don't misundertsand me. It IS the purpose and I am telling you you have done a remarkable job. I have seen Journalistic photos of incredible things . . . including atrocities. They don't make me feel happy . . . nor was that the intent of them. That doesn't make them bad photos. Usually, quite the opposite. Your shot has elicited feelings. All I wanted to do was bring to your attention what sort of feelings it would likely get here! I believe life is intrinsically beautiful . . . even though I know there is that "other" side. I think we're agreed . . . so don't feel any need to suggest I be sheltered from reality . . . I have lived through far too many wars to need that protection! :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Hi rui...

This is really beautiful one..
In fact you are shaving him so closely..
Regardless of what the graffiti on wall..Even if at some different background, This image will make same impact.

Here, I would like to mentioned about Dynamism..
Dynamism, I am not talking about is not generated by motion blur.
I can say it is "Temporary" dynamism & one may feel bored seeing motion blur again & again.

The main thing is of SOUL of image..& body language of characters.
Body language dose not always can be taken out from motion or by action but from the expressions. Real expressions but not rhe Fake expressions of Photo sessions.

Expressions of character at delicate timing.

Here examples of kids photo which really I feel Dynamic: http://www.magnumphotos.com/CoreXDoc/MAG/Media/TR3/F/4/F/M/LON5177.jpg (By Alex majoli)

http://www.magnumphotos.com/CoreXDoc/MAG/Media/TR3/F/P/Y/G/LON41204.jpg (Chris Steele-PerkinsSchool children during a rainstorm. 1981)

Well done..
-Regards,
