About In the quiet before the holiday storm, I hid in China Camp all day. I saw 4 people all day, and one was the Park Ranger to tell me the park was closing at sunset.

Forcast was heavy fog when I woke up today, so I was excited to to head back out there, and fill more in the China Camp series. ..that looks to now be all shot in the fog or sheeting rain.

I shot Ilford Delta 400 35mm all day, but at sunset, I needed digital to back myself up. I shared almost every shot with the 20D, and when the sun had dropped below the west to my back, it was all digital till the Ranger showed up.

I spent most of the day walking around the area, but kept finding myself along the beach. Here is one of the last shots of the night. I had waited all afternoon for the tide to crawl out so I could duck under the pier where I would have enough height to not be standing in sludge and freezing SF bay water.

Petal Wijnen   {K:47835} 11/22/2006
Wonderful long exposure shot and great in B&W!!! Great tones, excellent composition... almost perfect, but for the very slight tilt of the horizon... fix that and it's more than well done!!

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 11/22/2006
Oh Petal.. so picky. ;)
You are so right. I need a bigger monitor.. (my cheap excuse to ask for a 30" Apple display for my birthday)

Here is the straight(er) version. Thanks for catching that, and the very nice comments!

welcome back!

-joel

straight.

Joel,,the pic was perfect before the fix,,,very well done ,,love the mood and the tone to it,,,I would have this pic in my living room. Great contrast and a great eye!!!

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 11/22/2006
Dave,

Thanks buddy. Very kind words! So glad you like it... even before Petal aimed her perfectly straight eyes on it! ;)

cheers,
-Joel

Bruce Harper   {K:5305} 11/22/2006
Nice one Joel, long enough exposure to give the water a silky feel without being too long to blur the rowboat.

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 11/22/2006
Thank you very much Bruce!

..that was the hardest part. I was waiting for the water to be it's most still around the boat, and just roll off images at the perfect time when I knew a wave wouldn't lift the boat. There were mant that didn't work.. this had to be luck!

cheers, and thanks again!

-J

Very nice photo, I love the water with the slow exposure, it is amazing that the boat is still in such good focus.

Oh, yeah, the rich blacks and fantastic framing are quite strong in this shot, Joel. There's a strong sense of timelessness in this image.

chris d   {K:2945} 11/22/2006
Wonderful pic joel - your about adds an enormous amount to the enjoyment.Hope you had a good pair of boots on.
The one thing that bothered me tho' was the telephone lines. Kinda detracted from the Peace and Tranquility - messy humans...so completely out of character for me, I removed them to try it out. I guess I only did this because I liked the serenity of the pic so much. This has been a great series. This is all of course, only my opinion.
Have a look at the attached....
(oh- and thanks for commenting on "to the sea"..)

chris d   {K:2945} 11/22/2006
p.s
It was only a very quick PS job...Im sure you could clean it up properly (if you so choose..lol)wasnt sure about the "pole" at the end.

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 11/22/2006
Howdy Chris.

Great idea! It looks like a different image w/ the wires painted out. The thought had crossed my mind at one point to do so, but I have so many other images in the series w/ the wires in it, that I didn't want that 'hey, you removed the wires in that one!' situation ;)

I do like it better with what you did!

Thanks again for the time taken to paint out the wires, and that very kind comments!

all the best,
cheers,
-Joel

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 11/22/2006
Hi Joel,

Sorry - it's been a while. Work has been keeping me from Usefilm or anyother fun stuff for a while now.

The atmosphere in this photo is great - extremely moody, but also quite ominous. Although it all looks rather peaceful, it also bears something threatening in it. The prelude of some severe weather. All of this emphasised by the B&W, and by the slow shutter, softening up the water beautifully.

My only nit would be the highlighs being a bit blown out - a minor clipping of the white might give it an even moodier grey cast; but that's about it. I don't think this shot should be about technicalities or perfection - it's the feel that matter shere, and that aspect is superbly captured...

Cheers,

Hugo

James Cook   {K:36728} 11/22/2006
Excellent tones and textures. I might have cropped a bit more off the bottom of the image.

What does it mean to say "90 degrees off" in relation to a circular polarizer?

Alex Tropiec   {K:307} 11/23/2006
Joel,

Another simply amazing shot in your series. You're photos are a true inspiration and after I eat some turkey I'm off to shoot!

Congratulations on the well deserved award.

Cheers

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 11/23/2006
Hi Hugo,

great to hear from you! Sounds like you have been very busy! I do know what you're going through with work! My job sucked me off the planet for about 3 months. I didn't even know what day of the week it was if you asked me, but I knew when the deadline was! :)

I hear ya on the white values. Good call. I wanted this to look as much like the Ilford film I used to shoot the rest of the series, and it's very blown out and contrasty from the yellow filter. I do think I went too far, but they all look the same when printed.. so *phew* on that! Took lots of time in PS to get the curves and contrast to balance the Ilford.

Thanks again so much for your insightful and honset critique on the image!

Hope you get a break soon, and get to have some fun! take a 30min break with our camera.. it what works for me.

cheers,
-Joel

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 11/23/2006
Thank you very much James!

Yeah... was trimming that bottom like a water line that kept rising, and liked the bottom a bit dark to close out the contrast from the blown out white on the top of frame.

i noted that '90 degrees off' to note that my cir-polar was turned linear to the axis of it's base filter. More for me than anyone else :)

cheers, and thanks again!

-Joel

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 11/23/2006

Thanks for the information. Yeah, I don't know that it would matter for a cirpol because of that circular part. Anway, I'd rather see too much information than too little. Keep up the fine work.

rebecca claassen   {K:16419} 11/23/2006
Hey hey Joel!!! Congrats on the award for another stunning China Camp image. This is great!
A beautiful composition, excellent work. I actually like the wires here, I think they add to the detail (sorry Chris!).
I am really enjoying your success with this series, keep up the amazing work.
