Howdy Pops,
This is great! I love the long lens effect, making the horizon of the water line tower up in the composition. Your colors are very nice, and not something that I would connect with the look and feel of AC. This is a warmer image.
It's not my taste, but the soft layer, string over the a very contrasty version of the image works very well! It's more like a watercolor print on fine art velvet paper.
LIght and shadow are wonderful. Very nice art image!
You should email me the PS full rez file, and I'll printyou a copy on William Turner 320 paper to bring w/ me to B'more in a few weeks.

Joel-- Thanks for the comments. Fooling around a bit with layers on this one (best way to learn). I reduced my .PSD working file in size a bit and emailed it to your COMCAST account. There is still quite a bit more detail in the reduced .PSD than that found in the .JPG.

PS: Just HAD to be blunt, my friend . . . and had hoped to see the expression on your face. I know that the intended effect here was an impressionist and artistic work . . . and in that goal . . . congrats. I love the swells in the Atlantic here and the composition is nice. The colors and high contrast further the effect you were seeking (I hope) but seem to work well. It's unique and creative and will likely appeal to a lot of people . . . and a lot of people will likely be saying . . . "Huh?" LoL! Surprisingly enough . . . though you couldn't tell it from my comment . . . I am one of those that really like the effect you have here . . . it strikes me as artistic and emotive . . . everything the french impressionists tried to convey in their paintings. Impressive work and MUCH better than the acorn on turds composition! ;)

Doyle-- thanks-- you did miss my expression as I read your comment while bracing for the blast. I was trying to work with layers and seek an objective of a certain mood and actually got pretty close to what I had in mind. A rare event for my beginner skills in PS.
I showed it to my son Ben and his reaction was "artsy f*rtsy". I conceded to him that it was maybe more f*rtsy than artsy.
Thanks for the encouragement but I do have to say that ACORNS is my crowning achievement.

Hi Jan. You're really showing off your artistic side here. I like the effect you've created, and I think the composition is good.
Placing the onlooker in the lower portion of the frame is of course necessary for the impression you were going for. My first thought was that he should have been a little more to the right. However, upon further reflection, I prefer him where he is because to me seeing more of his footprints behind him in the sand is very effective.
This image certainly has that 'feeling small' emotion to it, and I think it also has an 'alone' feeling to it as well. This may have been increased if the only footprints visible were he onlooker. It would probably take a lot of painstaking PS work to get rid the others, and likely not worth it, but it's just a thought.

Jason-- First off-- let me thank you for an excellent critique. Secondly, kind of weird-- like you were looking over my shoulder when I was preparing this picture for USEFILM in Photoshop.
I did debate about the crop and went for the way it is for exactly the reason you mentioned. I also thought about the footprints and was about to isolate the footprints when something told me - "Don't do it!" And I didn't -- but I may go back and play a bit just to see what it looks like after I clone the beach etc.

Jan... After all the above, what can I add other than I love the *feel* :)
~~GRIN~~ Actually, I'm still laughing after reading the Doyle/Jan interplay... The dog turds and acorns tickled the funny bone and this tickles the *love it* bone...:)
For me, your play has added to the vastness of space creating added *feeling small* feel... I've forgotten how to play in layers so will have to re-educate me here...:)

Onie-- When Doyle weighs in "LOOK OUT"; he has a great sense of humor and I also learn a lot from his objective critiques. I also appreciate your comments so much; this photo was a struggle for me because I used it to start learning about layers in Photoshop. Using Quick Mask, selective overlays with fades and some semi-transparent posterizing effects, it was a good exercise for me.
I even considered pasting some acorns into another version of this but that was just going way too far.

WoW Jan... somehow I had missed this image... I too am guilty of looking at the last final images posted :( more than not ...
Every now and then I waunder back into some ones earlier postings.. Sure am glad I did. This is an amazing shot...
