About Trying to apply some techniques that I have learned from a few usefilm friends. You guys know who you are and I hope you like. Thanks for the continuing help!

I was actually taking photos of a property for a friend of mine so he could put together a landscape for the owners. While I was there this young mason just happened to be in the way. Well, I twisted off the wideangle and took advantage of the opportunity.

Thank you so much, Raissa. I was beginning to think no one liked this photo. Thanks again for the kind words.

Thank you Yutaka. Really appreciated from such an experienced photographer.

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 12/19/2006
Perfectly suited for B&W; excellent candid and "person at work" study. I like this one; nice tonal gradations and the shallow depth of field focuses the eye on the subject.
--Best to you, Jan

Wayne Winsauer   {K:6290} 12/19/2006
Jan, as always, I really appreciate your comments and your kind words. Thank you.

Man at work this one. The first I noticed was that if his hammer slides of the stone the chap will need fast medical attention.
Like the B&W too (as you know by now) and the DOF.
Keep on working my friend.

Alain

This is a good shot to understand why you may want to intentionally under-expose. See how the rocks are completely devoid of detail? They're overexposed, and because it's digital, it's clipped, meaning there is no detail to rescue. If this were underexposed, you could restore brightness to the blacks in post.

Wayne Winsauer   {K:6290} 1/7/2007
I completely understand what you mean paul. I really had a hard time with this one in post because of those rocks. I took a few learning pics this morning with the new 400D and things are looking good! slightly under exposed and easy to deal with. I havn't read the links you gave me yet but I bet after I do, I should be able to play with the histogram a lot better with the Serif program. Right now the other program gives me a brightness & contrast but it doesnt show it on the histo. The serif does but it is just harder to work.
Thanks for the input. It will be well applied!

Tim Brennan   {K:1558} 1/15/2007
This is a great composition and well observed portrait. I really love this shot and would make it a favorite except for the one thing that Paul noted about the highlights. Yeah, I've also found through bitter experience that it's usually possible to rescue a slightly underexposed photo but an overexposed one is gone forever. When I shoot with AE I usually set it to -2/3 exposure compensation (at least that's what works wiht my Olympus). I think I've actually developed too much tolerance for underexposure, and probably overdo it myself. The histogram helps a lot too. But even so this is one of those photos you want to keep coming back to. Great eye.

Wayne Winsauer   {K:6290} 1/16/2007
Wow! Tim, thank you so much for the encoragement and the advice! Trust me when I say it is well taken and will be well applied! I still don't know how to adjust the exposure on my new camera in auto mode but I have been trying to manually set the shutter speed just a hair faster than usual as to get a little bit of under-exposure. Thank you, again, for the help! I have been learning so much since I have joined usefilm and I am even more eager to learn more now. Tim, please feel free to comment as honestly as you like on any of my work as I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Wayne
