About Another in my (still growing) series of the Apes of the San Diego Wildlife Park.

I went back to look at my images from a few months ago, and found this one in the middle of all my images from that day. It still amazes me when I can feel something for an image, that just flicked past my screen before.

I must have about 60 images of this Ape... so I wonder what I'll find as time goes on.

M-

soon as I saw the project show up, and saw that Phil re-worked his Lion image, I went back to the Zoo. It was nice to see those images, that I thought I picked to death.. and then to stumble on the two ducks, and this harmonious image of my favorite ape. ..and had to be.

thanks for the comments M!

Petal Wijnen   {K:47829} 12/18/2006
Fantastic portrait (no I won't say anything about the sim... oops I almost did... LOL)!!! Great in B&W, wonderful tones, DOF and (com)position of this Gorilla. He looks like his pondering or 'pining over the fjords'... ehh wrong animal/country/scenery... jungle I mean... excellent capture and well deserved BIP!!!

Jan Hoffman   {K:38998} 12/18/2006
Joel-- You go back and ponder pix you skipped, pick one and get an instant BIP?
Congrats for going back with fresh eyes!
See you soon.
--Love, Pops

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 12/18/2006
yes Petal.. he's just like us... pining over the fjords. Or he's wondering why I didn't frame down a little more. ;)

thank you so much for the always entertaining comments! :)

cheers,
-joel

This is very crisp and the moment is great. To improve the composition, I cropped a little off the right so the ape is not so centered. I am hoping that you turned the camera vertical at some point and got more of the body. A close vertical portrait would be cool too.

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 12/18/2006
Thanks Jim!

I wanted to not confine him too much, and went with the angle of his arm to give it a centered triangle shape. I also didn't want it to look too different from the surrounding images from the series.

Don't know if you looked at my other images in the series, but no long vertical shots.. the apes were very tired that day! ..it was freakin HOT!

thanks for the suggestions!

cheers,
-joel

Oh Joel - I so love all of these! The way the line in the rock follows her arm is really great. Beautiful work, and very happy to see a BIP!:)

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 12/19/2006
Thank you very much Peta!!

I am so glad that you like this series!

Johnny Kurtz   {K:893} 12/19/2006
Joel,

Well done, and an award well deserved!

The range of tones here are perfection. The DOF and how it drops right off of the ape's right leg real keeps you with the ape and within its thoughts.

I have always been drawn to apes, and probably/foolishly would scale a wall at a zoo to be with them; look for me on the news some day :)

Once again, beautiful photograph!

Cheers,
Johnny

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 12/19/2006
Thank you John!

I'll look for you on the news for your adventure in to the apes den. Don't think for a second that I won't beat you to it. ;)

thanks buddy!

cheers,
-joel
