About Looking north from the top floor of the SFMOMA.

The wonderful design of the building allows light to travel down through the top widow. and fill the museum with indirect light. The center 'tube' that glows with light under the window has two circle cross shapes cut through it. Each, about 20 feet around. There is one on the south, and this one on the north. Behind these gigantic cucolorus shapes, are the curved stair wells that bring you to the top floor.

On my way down, I caught these openings at an angle that had me setting up for another shot. The soft light, and depth was so amazing, that taken out of context, the opening could very well be only 2 inches around.

There is no photoshop work, and no grain reduction at all. The power of these shades would not be as glorious if the grain were not there. I printed this at 6"x6" on Hahnemule Photo Rag Smooth 308gsm. Will frame it as seen, with matte weight at the bottom of 1".

Joel-- this one is so impressive for the fantastic shades and sculpted, dimensional feel; this truly shows off what the "H" can do! I think this may be my favorite of all the pictures you posted here so far and I consider it perfect for framing and hanging on any wall of "good taste".
--Love, Pops

Ron Wilson   {K:18161} 1/7/2007
Wow, you nailed this one Joel. Work like this with such a great range between black and white is reminding me of the great masters of light, from Karsh to Stegleitz to Adams. I'm not putting you there as yet, but once in every 1,000 shots you get a real winner.
Regards Ron.

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 1/7/2007
Thank you Ron!!

Seriously, I have been so inspired lately by the masters. Using this Hasselblad has schooled me in so many ways with shadow and light. It's amazing to pick up the DSLR after a few rolls of 120 thru the Hass, and have a much more refined eye for what I'm shooting.

For this one, it was all about the shadow. Down to the way I knew I would pull the image out with the developing process. (yea, i've flipped my freakin brain, and love standing in my sink, smelling like stop-bath).

Someday... if I can only find those zones that Adams didn't tell anyone about.. I'll get there!

Cheers, and thanks again! hope you had a good holiday.

-joel

Nice shapes which fit well for black and white to highlight. Congrats for the bip too
Jeanette

Alex Tropiec   {K:307} 1/8/2007
Congrats Joel!

Your vision is a true insperation. I don't what else to say... I'm jealous... You're able to see and 'capture' these images. Exposure, Composition, and processing are perfect.

-Alex

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 1/8/2007
Alex!

I am very flattered!! thank you so much!! I just love being inspired by the masters, and after seeing all of those Weston's at the SFMOMA, I lost my sh!t, and went off in the museum with my camera. I was waiting for security to escort me out, but I ran out of film.

Thanks again! Let's go shooting some time soon! ...i'm on P3, so my time is left to only Sundays. I went out today, and shot a bunch of big rig trucks out by the dump. Now *that* is being bored on a Sunday!

cheers,
-j

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185017} 1/8/2007
Hi Joel,

I think in order to fully appreciate this photo, it should be seen (and held) on paper, and not as an internet image.... I can feel there is a vast subtlety in tones, which are much more difficult to see on screen.

Cheers,

Hugo

Joel Aron   {K:14920} 1/8/2007
Howdy Hugo,

Thanks again. I honestly understand what you're saying about being able to review some of the b/w images here. When I down converted this image for the site, it lost something. On an interesting note, I printed this twice. One, 6" square, and the other 12" square. The 8" hold the most strength. Seeing it online, has an even weaker power than both prints. Today, I just got a package from B&H.. the new Crane & Co. 'Museo Silver Rag' paper for my Epson R1800. It's been said that this paper is the first time that an inkjet printer passes that of the quality of a lab produced print. Holding the paper now in my hands, and looking at this image on my screen, I can't wait to get home make a 6" print on it. It's like no other paper I've seen before.

If you're interested, I can send you one :)

email me (phil has my email), and tell me where to send it to!

cheers, and thanks again for the very understood "non" review of my image! Appreciate it very much!

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:179654} 1/13/2007
..It is sure that your photography is clearly settled and also without explanations the idea of the light and of the games it is perfect. It is a cross, in window, very delicate the linear form and curves they get married very well! Also the architect did a good work.. :) (i’m an surveyor [geoemtra].. project of houses)
I thought of 20 feet… about 6 mt. Wooow.. the photography to poster is certainly magnificent I imagine her,.. in one wall..in one office!
A big black&white, Joel, beautiful also in the effect of the grain.
All the best, to you and your wife..
Cheers
roby

ps.. scale (eng) = scale (ita) ;)

Sam Graziano III   {K:14064} 4/19/2007
What a fantastic capture Joel, The Tonal values and the curving feel to this are out of this world. I agree with you that if the grain wern't there, the shot wouldn't be the same. Thanks for sharing all the details of the shot.

Kind regards

Sam Graziano III

PS

Congrats on a well deserved BIP!!!

Andrew George   {K:632} 6/17/2007
Hey joel, I hope all is well with you. I've got some questions for you that I was hoping you could help me out with.

I don't know if I just don't know how to use my camera settings like the aperture and shutter etc. or I don't have a good eye, but i'm finding that my pictures aren't coming out as clean and clear as other pictures that i've seen. So is there a beginners book that you could recommend I use to master the basics?

How has photography been for you as a career?

Andrew

Stan Ciszek   {K:35333} 9/23/2007
