About Using 68mm extension tubes and a 105 micro lens . . . a razor thin DOF - I tried to get the pollen on a small Ruby slipper flower from the front yard. I have attached a set-up photo which shows the black cloth BG and lighting for this one!

OMG Doyle I love your macro creative flower , title , light and all ...
BUT your STUDIO set-up takes the cake !!!
It looks like a surgeons operating table ... and with the little bitty flower ...haaaaahhhaaa!! I just love it !!!

Liz Wallis   {K:26076} 1/4/2007
wow...all that technicality....but look at the result :) shows you what patience and a little care gets you :) Beautiful work and lovely tones Doyle.

Shirley D. Cross   {K:151895} 1/4/2007
Now I'm jealous after seeing your setup. I have nothing quite so fancy. Anyway, great shot, dear Doyle!:)

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/4/2007
Well thanks very much Michele . . . I had to laugh at the "surgeon's operating table" comment . . . . you're looking at a white cardborad box on top of a foot stool . . . a couple of clamps from the hardware store to hold the black backdrop . . . and my trusty Magnifying Glass Head robot with aligator clip hands (I call him Roby - having bought him for about $5 on E-bay)! It IS a little flower . . . but that won't stop me! Just HAD to get out of that pesky ocean breeze! ;) Anyway . . . Always love to hear from you!

Doyle I <~~~~~

Thanks very much Shirley - for the comment -

I did get the e-mail yesterday and immediately responded as you requested . . . when things happen . . . it's sometimes better in the long run than when things stay as they are . . . faith and trust my friend . . . your left and right hand in this case. I will remember daily!

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16478} 1/5/2007
Razor thin dof is right...and you accomplished your goal Doyle, I see pollen on the curly thingees (technical term) and dusting the petals! That set up...wow, guess you eliminated the pesky ocean breeze huh?...but what have you done to that poor innocent flower? And you questioned my methods...hummmpf! ;)

Take care...Robin

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16478} 1/5/2007
Negative space...hmmmm...blank canvas just screaming for some creative editing...hmmmmm....

You started it!

...help...

John Hatz   {K:156912} 1/5/2007
Excellent macro, I love the use of the apperture here...even the image gives me the idea of a pretty wider apperture...
Excellent way to crop and place the flower and very nice brown tones too....a spot at the middle area from sensor dust...yea, I have the same problem...big problem...
Very good!

Avi     {K:67818} 1/5/2007

     {K:12494} 1/8/2007
WOW, if I was a bee, I would think that looks tastey, it is beautiful, and the bees do love the sunflower, I had sunflowers this summer for a while and bee's to, they was beautiful while they lasted. Excellent job.

Mary Slade   {K:40918} 1/8/2007
Amazing detail- and I'd never have known how small it was. Lovely colour and lighting.

Marcus Armani   {K:36597} 1/8/2007
wonderful macro, the floral looks very nice with the nice lighting and great use of DOF., your setup is very different yet effective, really nicely done.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/9/2007
My Dear Robin!
Let's not jump to conclusions here! This poor blossom you see here was inadvertantly cut from the stalk of life by our gardener who, with weedeater running, was forced to spin the business ened away from the idyllic and playful chasing of a neighborhood, scamping pup who was frolicking about chasing butterflies and the like since we have no snow to play in! Of course, he was immediately terminated, sued and deported.
In a deep and reverent ceremony, we proceeded to gently lift the fallen blossom and carry it into the shelter of our small, humble abode. To preserve the soon to fade image for all eternity . . . I took some photos . . . promising to show them to future Ruby Slipper young that would be following soon! Hence the memorial shot you see posted!
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/9/2007
LoL! Ok, for the record, Marlyce is the owner . . . I only rent now and then! Hehehehee . . .

I did start it . . . but there's NO help coming . . . and you have to admit it IS kinda' Fun. The Other project (may) be finished tonight . . . :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16478} 1/9/2007
kekekekeke...

ROTFLMAO...just saw Avi's comment!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/9/2007
Thanks John: I have exploded the original 400% and still fail to see the sensor dust issue you mention. I have attached an image to ask . . . is this what you were referring to? If so . . . that's not dust but actually IS the image. Clearly . . . sensor dust can be cloned relatively easily if extant . . . until the sensor is cleaned anyway. Thanks for pointing it out . . . last time I did that it turned out to be a bird! LoL!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

This??

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/9/2007
Thanks Avi! . . . No worries . . . as good as you already are, by the time you turn 22 yrs. old like me . . . you'll be VERY good! LoL!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/9/2007
Thanks Barbara! If you look at the first comment you'll see right away that this is a small Ruby Slipper blossom and not a sunflower at all. The entire flower would fit on a single sunflower petal! BUT . . . it is enjoyed by the bees very much! ;)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/9/2007

Jan Hoffman   {K:39467} 1/10/2007
Doyle - I must have missed this when going thru the posted photos over the last few days. This is brilliant; the concept and the execution are amazing. If I had tried this I am certain that never in a gazillion years would it have occurred to me to convert it to sepia - that was a masterstroke and I think besides the image it itself the sepia was a perfect choice. Love this one.
--Best to you, Jan

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/11/2007

Thanks Jan:

Never sure how many people actually see the profile . . . after the first time anyway. Still ill, but back at work and will spend a few minutes here . . . must be getting better soon, huh?

Regards,

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 1/16/2007
Sorry, but you can't be "ridiculously ill" as you've put in your bio. If you're ill, that's it, you're ill. And I wish you the speediest recovery, whatever it's from. Even if it's some ridiculous disease. Your absence from UF was immediately noticed - I wish you all the best and sincerely hope to see you back here soon.

Ann  Van Breemen   {K:13508} 1/27/2007
An excellent macro, Doyle, and a beautiful composition and presentation. Thanks for showing us your set-up. I already have a Tamron macro lens but I've recently ordered an extension tube for really small critters, plus an angle viewfinder for those low down jobs. I see you use one too. I'm getting too old to keep getting up and down all the time. Getting down is o.k. but getting back up.... Quite another story. Thanks for your comments on my pics. Cheers, Ann.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100828} 1/30/2007
Thanks Ann!! :) I know how you feel. I'll be checking on the progress . . . extension tubes are interesting!
