Hi Cathy...:) This is a lovely, soft portrait... and your daughter has a beautiful happy face...:) New Years Eve is a fun time when young...

May be able to help on the PS... Not an expert here, just a player... :) Depends on what you want from this portrait and what you have already done editing wise to the original shot itself???... (To me looks a little magenta or red in the cast)...

There will be others way better to help... I did do a quick edit on this, using magnetic lasoo, selective colour and a bit of playing... but would be easier to work with the original not knowing your daughters skin tone, hair colour, lipstick etc... :)

Anyway, here is the play version...:)

Thanks Onie, you have managed to take out the red hue, what tools did you use to do that? I tried adding a warm filter but it left the red. I am quite enjoying this dabbling in photoshop, but have limited knowledge of what to try. Thanks again for your time and expertise. CC

~~GRIN~~ Cathy... As I said not an expert but as my husband used to do a lot of film/darkroom etc, just little things you notice...

OK... Just used the color balance... -21 red & +4 green... however, may have uploaded the magnetic lasoo version... On that I isolated your daughter and adjusted the levels a little plus selective color... LOL plus, did a soft blur around daughters hair and profile as the mag tool left a hint of the original... Then did a custom pass...

There are others here who would do a better edit of that I'm sure ~~grin~~ but hey, what the heck... I enjoyed seeing if I could help just a little...:)

Always remember to keep the original shot... Work on a copy...

Cathy, PS is a great, fun tool to use... Depending on the version you have, if PS7 (ps7 here)... the tools palette, if you right click on those, you will find extra tools also... Many processes, by name, are self explanatory...

I have found that quite often if shot looks cloudy or contrast not right, use levels and adjust to suit... If this doesn't lift it then curves is another tool... So many tools to use to get what you need... In the forums here, also PS editing info... worth a look...

Don't be frightened to just play, go for it...

Hope this gives you an idea... LOL I talk with my hands, my brain goes in ten different directions at once, so, even trying to explain PS is a challenge ~~GRIN~~...

Have heaps of fun...

Onie...:)

Not a bad effort, Cathy. As Onie says, try everything and just practice. Hue/Saturaion or Channel Mixer in Image Adjustment in Photoshop will help with colour casts. One good tip for portraits is to keep the yes sharp. If you can't keep them both sharp then always the one closest to you. The pose is a little too extreme, hence the furrowed brow, never flattering for a woman. Otherwise, the expression and eye contact is good. Hope this helps. I'm no expert with portraits myself, so keep practising and study other portraits, especially the ones that have won BIP's. Cheers, Ann.

Thankyou Mehul, This result is far removed from the original, but there is plenty of room for improvement. I have had a quick look at your portfolio and your work is meticulous. Do you have any suggestions to improve this portrait?
If I can figure out how I will attach the original, tomorrow when I have more time. CC

From the pure technical point of view, it is a very good work, Cathy. The whole coloring goes hand in hand with the rather soft focus, and it reminds me somehow of those beautiful takes of movies from the 1930s-1940s, when even special cameras/lenses were invented that were softening the contours and enhancing shines of light. The many brownisch tones do enhance this look very very well.

Only one thing that bothers here is the very strong pose that contradicts the subtleness of the photo. A bit of more natural ot neutral expression would make it stronger. BTW, was that really a pose or was it waiting until she turned? (I can hardly imagine the latter, but it could as well be.)

Best wishes,

Nick

Saludos
