About This is a rare view of a baby Gouldian Finch . . . one of the birds we raise. Seldom handfed, though we have hand fed them . . . they are brilliantly colored when they grow their plumage. (Handfed they become pets but a day or two without people interaction and they revert to 100% wild) This lil guy has some visible spots inside his upper beak. Apparently, there are two very narrow pipes down his throat and when we hand feed . . . we simply tilt the head and place the syringe where the food should go (HINT: NOT the lungs). But we don't do it in the dark. Young chicks need frequent feeding . . . and the adults distinguish where the food goes because the white around the dark areas is luminescent . . . and the pattern tells the adult where to place the food. An error results in instantaneous death. Parent raised chicks have no light bulbs . . . so Mother Nature provided them with this method. Both parents care for the young and it is very rare to see them unattended . . . while feeding in the aviary . . . both parents left so I took this shot while I could . . . with the trusty point and click . . . no Nikon and no time. I selected a circular central area, inverted and blurred the BG a tad - adjusted lighting and cropped. Not bad for No Nikon, eh?

To view an adult, see THIS prevous posting HERE,

Well.... I just added this to 'My Fav's'.

You Could, and perhaps Should be involved with some kind of 'National Geographic' magazine photo's Doyle...
You are Amazing ....
Yike's... I didn't want
to use the words amazing, wonderful, excellent , or be repitious today....

I love to read your 'abouts' I always learn new things. I didn't want to give the same Rating I always do.... 7+

It Just Happens.
Best Regards,
Michele~

Michele . . . as far as cool friends . . . you too are in my favs . . . and an easy 10. And that says a LOT from somebody who sees the So. Cal. women in bikinis on the beach. A 10 for them? Nahhhhh . . . always preferred kindness, honesty and recognition of my genius before I hand out the 10s!! LoL!

Warm Regards (though rain is in the forecast),

excelelnt capture

AJ Miller   {K:46155} 2/10/2007
Impressive detail. Pleased to see you've discovered the usefulness of the occasional "no Nikon" approach - essential unless you go everywhere in a truck (though you could always get a little Nikon, I suppose...)

AJ

PS. Googled "Olympus D550z" and what did I find on the first page? "Doyle D. Chastain Photographer"! Thanks Google.

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 2/10/2007
Doyle - Holy Toledo; this is fascinating. And every time I turn around you have some arcane knowledge on some subject that I have no clue to. Now this one is downright education (feh!) and this schtick with the tubes is amazing. Who knew?
Any you have a finch nursery?
Well, anyhoo, I am marking this one as a fav just so I can show it to my wife and have her oooo and ahhhh over the baby finch.
--Best to you, Jan

Marian Man   {K:69880} 2/10/2007

An excellent shot Doyle. Never underestimate the point and shoot compacts. I've got quite a few good images from my little Powershot. Just think of the classic pics from a hundred years ago with just the primitive cameras they had back then. It's really a matter how good the operator is and I think you are one of the good ones. Cheers, Ann.

Riny Koopman   {K:61480} 2/11/2007
Beautiful capture- the colours and clarity wonderful. Can see such detail !

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16448} 2/11/2007
Thanks for sharing Doyle...your new baby and your knowledge...good to see you have an encyclopedia handy! Ha...just kidding, pay back for the dictionary crack!

Not bad for the point and shoot...I still have mine and use it often. Perfect for times likes this when pointing and shooting IS the only option.

I'll take your word that this is a rare sight (my encyclopedias are NOT handy, no time to Google baby finches)...congrats on capturing it so well my friend!

Take care...Robin

Oh Jan! I assumed everybody knew already that Marlyce and I raise everything from Finches to Amazons and sell wholesale to the public four times a year and to pet stores any time. We have hundreds of birds and breed them . . . hand-feed some too . . . we know a great deal about the birds. Thanks very much!

Hi Robin . . . rare even for me and I raise them. They're finicky breeders in captivity. Hope all is well with the 'new' one on your side too! :)

Doyle -- I had no idea that you two were into this at a professional level. Must require a lot of time and care and make vacations difficult to plan.

Well hello Doyle...I hope you have a very good excuse for neglecting us lately! ;)

Our "baby bird" (funny thing, I have said more than once that he reminds me of a baby bird) is stable, and considering his size, doing well.

Take care...Robin

Mary Slade   {K:40918} 2/12/2007
