About Maybe pushing the concept of the project a little, but these are after all materials that are used in a finished product viz. drinks.

Ever since getting hold of the Nikon I’ve wanted to try recreating some of my favourite shots that I took previously with my old Minolta A2. Adding the Sigma lens with a macro capability gave me a chance to try this one, but boy did it take some work! Anyway, here’s the result.

Now I know that some people will hate the frame. If that is you, by all means let me know, but please do still try to look at the image while ignoring the frame. By way of explanation, I like to use this particular frame style for colourful abstract images that I believe would work well as posters, and I use it to try to create that impression.

Very effectively done, AJ! I like the strong colour saturation.

everthing is perfect except the font...!!!! change the font please...!!!!

Sally Morgan   {K:9219} 2/13/2007
Ooh pretty!
Is that lovely and even out-of-depth-of-focus blur all real - or have you helped it along?
Like Deb - I like the frame, but I don't like the font - it's a bit too 'simple and curvy' for subject.

AJ Miller   {K:46155} 2/13/2007
Hi Sally! This shot is straight out of the box - no helping along at all. Apart from that beautiful font, of course!

AJ

Sally Morgan   {K:9219} 2/13/2007
With such a shallow depth of field - you did really well to get all the tops in focus - and the blur is especially creamy (with no help) - I'm most impressed :)
I've won a 70-300 apo macro on eBay for £34 - it's not arrived yet - I guess it could be in a mess - but I'll keep you posted.

Marian Man   {K:69880} 2/13/2007
wow!!!! very creative dear AJ!!!!!!! vibrant colors!!!!!! great work by you!!!! love it!!!!
all the best

Sally: I took quite a lot of shots (as usual - just checked - 79 to be precise). Focussing was not really a problem - I used manual for this, which is pretty easy with the crystal clear image in the Nikon viewfinder.

Is that a Sigma you've got hold of on eBay? I can't trust eBay to deliver in most of the locations where I find myself. I bought my 70-300 new in Gib and am pretty happy with it: it's light, but I find it still needs a tripod and/or fast shutter (1/500+ ideally).

AJ

Sally Morgan   {K:9219} 2/13/2007
Yes, it's a Sigma - I'm glad it's light :)
I just get all my packages delivered to work - there's always someone there to sign for them!
With the focussing - I meant you must have got the camera angle spot on to line up all the straw ends in the focal plane.

Well-done

John:

ONE: I like the frame . . . like you - I know people hate it but we GOTTA please ourselves!

B: Great choice of warm saturated colors.

THREE: I think a SLIGHTLY larger DOF would help. Here it seems almost TOO narrow. Circles and blur (you picking up what I'm putting down)?

and

IV: I like it then and I like it now. Seemed better then . . . but I instantly remembered it . . . so that says even more for the previous image, no? I'd try to even the exposure a tad too . . . the brightest should be centered (again, IMO) and not darker on the top edge alone.

:)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

AJ Miller   {K:46155} 2/14/2007
Cheers Doyle for your in-depth response.

Thanks for your support re the frame - I knew as soon as I did it I'd regret it, so your positive comment was most welcome.

Colours and DOF I'm happy with. But the lighting is an issue. I guess I could balance it up a bit by blasting more light from the other side (500W of halogen in this one!). But getting it centred would require a major rethink.

But surely with the fancy new machinery and after zillions of shots, this MUST be better than those taken with the old Minolta? Unfortunately I'm rather afraid you are right. In fact, all through processing I had the original Minolta shots up on the screen to see if I could even match them, let alone better them... Oh well.

great abstract and love the array of bright colours here. Lovely

Mark Wlaz   {K:4558} 2/15/2007
AJ,
What sort of lighting arrangement did you use to produce the image? Its very effective, I like it quite a lot.

Ann  Van Breemen   {K:11828} 2/16/2007
Hi John, brilliant colours on this one. I certainly recognise the style from past images of yours. The frame??? Well it's O.K. but I think maybe a little too heavy at the top and tends to overwhelm the image. Otherwise, keep experimenting. The results are certainly worth the effort. Cheers, Ann.

Joe Johnson   {K:7893} 2/16/2007
As a CC image, I think it looks fine. And I think you added the frame because Usefilm, unlike some other sites, doesn't allow you to alter the background color around your photo. So it's protection against the bright white. And it does protect the photo, in that way.

It's some plastic straws on a lit counter-top? I think the depth of field is what makes the photo - circles and blurred 'extrusion'. And nothing else is introduced. It's unusual. Everyday objects seen in an unusual way. I think they even have a project for that.

I think it is very well done. If one wanted to emphasize the edges on some of the softer 'circles', there are settings on things like the old 'deadman's actions for PS that would probably work.

AJ Miller   {K:46155} 2/16/2007
Hi Joe: many thanks for your comment. Yes, it is plastic straws, but in a glass with a lamp shone horizontally at the bottom of it.

Joe Brown   {K:22245} 2/17/2007
I think this abstract is very good. I can't think of anything to change, I like the colours, the dof seems just right to me (in fact I think it is this element more then anything else which makes this image special), I think the frame suits the image very well, the light and exposure is great. I like the pattern created by the random placement of the straws. Very well done AJ.

Best regards,
Joe

Sheryl Phillips   {K:2686} 2/22/2007
Very creative perspective! I like it a lot! Good colors, and you have a perfect focal point at the end of your straws. It's very fun, and very different...Excellent job!
~Sheryl

Joggie van Staden   {K:41275} 2/23/2007
Great use of shallow DoF, brilliant, exuberent colours. Well composed and presented. One small thing - would have used a more funky font to fit with the fizzy drink concept. Otherwise excellent AJ.
Joggie

John Loreaux   {K:85872} 2/26/2007
Hello AJ! How are You? This is very colorful and eye catching!I like the black frame and believe it shows this particular photo better than no frame! The straws look like they are shooting through space at light speed! Really cool! ( Er HOT!)
Take care AJ! My best....................John

AJ

I must say I am pleased with this shot you have here. I'm pretty sure the basic thing that most people focus on in this photo are the colors and the straws are just...there. There for a reason to give the colors hehe. I enjoyed lookin' at this photo. Keep it up. :)

~Devon
