Lovely capture Maryanne, like to spend a few days in a cabin like that with my wife and snow outside and a fire in the fireplace, but, in Holland no snow at all this year, it's spring now, and it's just march now.
The left upper part of the picture seems like sepia toned, I guess thats where the sun came from.

Strangely, it's more of an "urban oasis." Rock Creek Park runs right throught the center of Washington, DC. The road is a rather poorly marked, so it tends to be under-utilized. Consequently, it is one of my favorite routes.

Thanks Doyle, Glad you like it. I've been thinking I should stop and take some photos of this cabin, so on this snowy day, I took the long way to work. Attached is a photo a the price I had to pay for taking the time. Still it was worth it.

Glad you like it, Klaas. There are some old cabins in Shennandoah National Park (not too far from here) -- and I've stayed with friends in some of them. It is a real wilderness experience -- no electricity and you have to hike about a mile and a half in, carrying everything you need on your back.
Glad you liked the photo.

Thanks Michele -- it is a real log cabin with a somewhat colorful history.
This log cabin was originally built in the early 1900’s on a nearby site by Joaquin Miller, a colorful California poet who affected rustic ways (apparently a hippie, way ahead of his time). It had to be moved to make way for the construction of the elaborate Italian/Renaissance style park pictured below. The cabin was moved to the east bank of Rock Creek. After Miller's death in 1913 his family maintained ties to the cabin, and up until the mid-1950’s, Pherne Miller, Joaquin’s niece, conducted art classes and sold candy and soft drinks there.

I am native Ca. and know of Joaquin Miller-- actually Miller is my maiden name altho no relation ( dang) .. I love Cabins with a colorful history !!!

Michele,that is so cool that you know of Joaquin Miller. The cabin is not mine -- although in a sense it is, since it's government property, located in Rock Creek Park and administered by the National Park Service (so it's yours too).
The Park Service doesn't use it for anything, just preserves it and makes sure no one breaks in and vandalizes it. It has metal grill over the windows and is locked up pretty tight. It's adjacent to a picnic area, and is near a man-made ford in the creek. At one time, the road actually forded the creek there, although now the road runs past the ford and a bridge crosses the creek -- since the ford was not really an environmentally sound concept to begin with. The ford is still there but is not often open to vehicle traffic -- but people will often go across the ford on bicycles on a hot day -- and try to raise some spray to cool off.
That's everything I know, except that when the California State Association sought to move the cabin to Rock Creek Park, the Board of Control (predates management by the NPS)refused the request, but Sen. John D. Works of California intervened successfully on the association's behalf.
I'm so glad you get into this stuff. I used to work for the NPS (although not at Rock Creek Park) so I find it interesting to research.
