Simone Pallesi   {K:3586} 3/14/2007
This places are beautiful... the name "Awesome Eart" is the most appropriated.
I like the fog that exalt the silhouette of the trees in foreground. Sorry for my bad english
Cheers
Simone

Gary Dyck   {K:11822} 3/14/2007
Great shot, Hugo! The low lying fog really gives depth and mood to the shot. The "Awesome earth" title is really appropriate. Very nice. Cheers, Gary

A classic! Wonderful example of our awesome, extinguishing, Earth... Hope many generations ahead of us will see sights like this one.

Perfect in all respects.

All the best!

Great natural composition & tones , The fog add alot to the beauty of the photo .

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99049} 3/14/2007
Well Hugo this is likely my favorite of the series thus far. The image has a superb balance of the cooling blue hues lifting from the ground hugging mist contrasted in a harsh, almost violent slash of warm color, diagonally, no less, through the dramatic sky. I was thinking I saw something like a halo on the right central protrusion of the central tree. Actually . . . it's a tricky area which to my eye has a bit of brighter digital noise that gives an ever so faint hint of a halo. A closer look revealed an extraordinarily narrow line from there along the tree lines to the right. Apparently, grain or noise . . . eliminated from most of the cooler skyline area - but not too intrusive to cost details in the tree-lined horizon top. It's not noticeable at all at less than 200% but I don't know about the actual size of your image and, quite frankly, it's not distracting to me anyway. See what lengths we have to go through to critique YOUR work??

Brilliant slashs of warm light and color on the left reflected by the lazy, curved reflections of the same light on the right . . . The gentle progression of colors through the sky from blue through a greenish blue . . . reflected in the blue / white mists under it all. Lovely image. Open, serene and tranquil.

Mooi. En gedaane heel goed!

Groetjes mijn Vriend,
Doyle I <~~~~~

amazing as usual !!! i'm spellbound
besy regards
arijit.

Peter De Rycke   {K:35400} 3/14/2007
Yep, it's awesome at times in the morning .. i made a promise to myself to go see this more often than in the past (as i am not a morning type at all) .. i think definition and exposure are very good !
Peter

Andre Denis   {K:54192} 3/14/2007
So far Hugo.. my favourite of the three!!
I'm a sucker for fog and mist. So if you combine a beautiful sunrise (I assume) with a double layer of mist, you have my approval :)
This one really is a lovely composition. Many people try to do the single tree on a landscape scenario, but this one stands out from the crowd!
Great job!
Andre

Dirk Noort   {K:9197} 3/15/2007
Prachtig landschap, mooie fotografie!
Dirk.

Dan Wilson   {K:9060} 3/15/2007
Very lovely shot, you seem to have captured so much mood in this shot, well done

Salvatore Rossignolo   {K:13544} 3/15/2007
Great work Hugo, I think what I'm most taken with here is the almost complete lack of color on the bottom and the brilliant and natural saturation at the top. Nice to see your work again my friend.
Sal

Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen   {K:55218} 3/15/2007
Nothing else to say but astonishing

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47330} 3/16/2007
The silhouette is surprisingly challenging and rewarding in this scene, along with the fore and background atmosphere which complement the stark silhouette. to me this one has every single elements to be a real special capture.
Regards
Saeed

NN     {K:26787} 3/16/2007
Hi Hugo! I like this tranquil & moody scene ... the bright spots in the sky indicate that the fog is going to disappear very soon. The apt word here is certainly: AWESOME! :)

biljana mitrovic   {K:37518} 3/17/2007
This is realy something special!!!Wonderful landscape, great picture

Biljana

Michael Kanemoto   {K:22073} 3/18/2007
HdW

Yeah, what doyle said, except I would have been thinking to myself "HDR"... I've been using the tripod a lot now that I'm in ISO 100 land and with the tricky lighting I'm attacking these with bracketing. Let's hope they all assemble in the end though...

The only thing I can add to the ongoing commentary is there is a very young tree in the early light protected by the elder. Very good choice of symbolism.

Michael Fox   {K:3310} 3/18/2007
Hugo -- Awesome colors! The contrast of light and dark, colors, and textures really set this image apart. Great Eye!

Keep 'em coming!
-Mike.

Hi FransicHi Francisco,

Thanks for your comment, it sure was an awesome morning... I'm afraid that with all global warming, pollution and such things make the sky look radiant.... Nice clouds? naw... Aeroplane trails.

Either way, it was spectacular this morning.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/18/2007
Hi Galal,

Great to hear from you again! Thanks for your comment!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/18/2007
Hi Doyle,

I can only bow deeply to your indepth analysis! You are totally right....

The halo you see is there; it's the result of a bit of overprocessing. The original shot was much weaker than shown here, and I did some extensive work on this photo:

1. the mist is emphasised by using the select colour range, applying a huge feather, and copying the "misty" tones to a new layer, setting the layer mode to screen, transparency to about 50%

2. I selected the sky, using the same method, and set the layer mode to "multiply"; feather: about 3px, That's where the line results from.

3. I then combined the background layer and the sky layer into one, and used a shadow / highlight pass (CS2), that's what created the halo.

4. If I remember correctly, I then did the same with the trees in the foreground, layer mode: multiply.

5. I then rearranged the layer order, setting the mist layer to overlap the tree, and flattened the image.

6. Last step was to - if I remember correctly - duplicate the image onto a new layer, and used the "soft light" layer mode....

That's it...:)

Very nice to hear from you again, and keep up those excellent comments!

Cheers,

hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/19/2007
Hi Peter,

I'm not a morning person either, but I found these moments are well worth the agony of waking up for, and once I'm there, I forget how much I'd liked to stay in bed....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/19/2007
Hi Andre,

It sure was a very early morning, especially in my book...:) I have developed a weakness for squared images, and I notice I'm falling back on medium format cameras more and more ever since shooting this series; the type of composition just feels better, can't really explain it....

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/19/2007
Ha Dirk,

Dank voor de complimenten....:)

Groeten,

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your comment; it would've been rather difficult not to capture the mood in this situation...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/19/2007
Hi Sal,

Good to hear from you! It's an interesting mix, now you mention it; I hadn't looked at the image that way, but I think it's a pretty good assessment... It's also part of the post-processing, but it was basically as I remember it.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/19/2007
Hi Saeed,

I appreciate your comment - thanks. Very nice to hear from yo0u again.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/19/2007
MK!

HDR, heh? I've fiddled with it, but it never really landed in my workflow.... But considering the workflow I followed, it might not be such a bad idea....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Michael Kanemoto   {K:22073} 3/19/2007
I did a quick HDR here on the laptop (1 hour...) on a waterfall and I think you will be impressed with the results I should be posting next week.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/19/2007
:) Thanks Jo; it's not all that complicated, a matter of copy-pasting the right bits and then fiddling about a bit....:)

Cheers,

hugo

Andre Denis   {K:54192} 3/20/2007
Hi Hugo,
Yes, there is something about this kind of landscape presented in this format that gives it a kind of classic look. It just looks like it belongs on an easel!
Andre

Peter De Rycke   {K:35400} 3/20/2007
Thanks for stopping by Hugo, much appreciated !
Peter

Klaas  Baas   {K:15115} 3/24/2007
A real beauty Hugo, well captured atmosphere. beautiful light and colours. 7+++
I like the hazy background very much.
Have a nice sunday,

Klaas

Joggie van Staden   {K:38530} 3/25/2007
Beautiful image Hugo with a lovely atmosphere brought by the mist and the cool colours in the foreground. Agree with Doyle on the bright area top left (which can be effectively cloned out) and the slight halo around the central tree(I know this will be less noticeable on a bigger print size). Other than that a great image!
Joggie

Ace Star   {K:20388} 3/25/2007

good to see you too brother :)

all the best

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:75190} 3/30/2007
Very special in its combination of sharpest details on the upper part / sky / background and such a tired focus on the foreground. I wouldn't change anything of this well balanced composition except perhaps of some less sky and some more earth and fog.

Great work, Hugo!

Nick

Tycho Posthumus   {K:249} 1/14/2008
This is a wonderful shot Hugo, as always, but what kinda distracts me is the (I think) crooked horizon. Please tell me if I'm wrong.

All good,
Tycho
