Hi Steve,
The Lotus Sutra was the most important od the teachings og Gautam Buddha, the significance of the Lotus Flower is seen in the "Law of cause and effect" like the law of gravity or electiricity, the cause is the flower and the effect is the seed, this signifies the causes we do as our thoughts, deeds and words, the effect is the Karma, of the things happening around us.
