About Had another play in PS to try for a different 'aged' effect....from the bottom of Aunt Anne's photo box in the back of the wardrobe.
Any thoughts? Have I totally murdered it or not?!!!

I really like this photo! Title is so suiting considering we are here in snow still in Canada. I like the coloring and it appears like it was from another era. Congrats!

Luis  Steinberg    {K:17670} 3/20/2007
Hahahaa...wonder sweet, with all the feelings.- LUIS

Meg Metcalfe   {K:5967} 3/21/2007
I like the cheeky smile of the girl on the right. It's a good effect Bek, from the thumbnail I thought it was a genuine old photo!

pertti jukkara   {K:1600} 3/21/2007
happy seven!

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
Hi there Victoria, thanks so much for your time commenting on this image, it is really appreciated.
We are just starting to experiance some cooler weather over here, not quite cool enough for snow though!!
cheers, Bek

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
Thanks so much Luis,
cheers, Bek

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
Hiya Meg, the girl on the right very nearly got cropped out!!!
Am happy to hear that you thought the thumbnail looked genuinely 'old'...that was what I was trying to acheive, wasn't too sure about how to get the effect tho', so played and played in PS. Thanks for your great comment, as always, it is very much appreciated!
cheers, Bek

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
Thankyou Pertti,
cheers, Bek

You're welcome Bek, I really enjoy your work!
Meg.

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 3/21/2007
I like the effect and for different reasons this is just as appealing as the version with the desat. You nailed the bottom of the photo box effect and the girls are just as cute and appealing either way.
--Best to you, Jan

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
Aww thanks Jan. I too am happy with both images, each has their own 'bits of good'... LOL.
Am pleased I was able to get the feel I was looking for, although I have just now decided that I should have tried to get a fold crease across a corner somewhere....maybe...I dunno!!
cheers, Bek

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30036} 3/21/2007
Murdered it? Not at all. I love it. The coloration is nicely balanced and appealing to me. The shot is priceless, particularly successful with the smile from the girl far right. Antonia

Liz Wallis   {K:25679} 3/21/2007
Far from murdered Bek. You acheived that aged look you were wanting superbly. I hope you kept notes on how you did it :) I love both versions and applaud you and your "playing".. stunning results for both :)

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
Antonia, thanks so much for dropping in and leaving such a great comment on this image. I do appreciate your time here very much. I am pleased to say that the response for this one has eased my concerns as to whether I pulled it off ok.
Thanks again, Cheers, Bek

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
I did keep notes Liz, I wrote them on the inside of my skull with a 2B pencil!! No, no notes, but I do remeber what I did as it wasn't as fiddly as I thought...phew!
Ta much for your too kind comment :^)
smiles, Bek

p.s. are you a cab sav girl...or a shiraz girl, just goin' to pop down to the bottle-o!!

Liz Wallis   {K:25679} 3/21/2007
That would be cab sav...u did say you had a cork screw didn't you?

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
Indeed I did, heck...I'll even bring a spare!!

Mike  Adams   {K:7108} 3/21/2007
Wow.
Very different from the original selective coloring.
Glad you attempted this as you have done this picture some justice, IMO.
I like this one better as it makes you think of days past and being a kid again.
Great work!
P.S. How did you accomplish this? I have a few photos that i think would look great through this type of processing!
7++++ and its getting added to my fav's!

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 3/21/2007
Hi there Mike...and the thanks goes to you for suggesting something new!! :^)
I work with PhotoShop Elements 4 (humble, but just about all I can keep up with and afford!!)so, if you use something different just adjust my process to suit.
First, the original layer was altered, colour saturated a little to get a glary look, then the lightness and contrast adjusted until I felt it looked right. Then levels adjusted to keep some tone in the shadows. There was some clone work on the girl at the right's cap, as she had a large blue logo on the side that I deffinately did not want.
Apply a second layer, convert to B+W, then add sepia filter and adjust, saturation, levels etc.
I also blurred the background to keep the focus on the girls.
Next came the eraser tool at different opacities, depending on the depth of the colour I was erasing. Time consuming, but worth it.
Some of the colours did not fit right with the overall look (both girls on right) as their swimmers were too bold, so I dodged some of the colour out to make it appear faded.
After that was a flatten of the layers, then the white border added. Next (because I didn't know how else to do it!!LOL) I used a brush to stamp on some white areas to 'grunge' up the edges a little.
That's pretty much it. There may have been an adjustment in there that I have missed, but that is the general idea.
I would love to see something that you try in this technique, so let me know how you go!!
cheers and good luck, Bek

p.s. hope my instructions weren't hard to follow, I tend to not function too well in the mornings and am much better at expressing myself after midday!!:^)

Shirley D. Cross   {K:143468} 3/22/2007
I like this one even better, and it looks more 'aged', Bek.:)

Roger Skinner   {K:65017} 4/9/2007
nice summer recollection... who says we are obese??

rebecca claassen   {K:16443} 4/9/2007
Hey there Roger, yeah, lucky kids!
cheers, Bek
