Yamil: Such an unusual looking bird. My wife and I would love to see these. We have often traveled to wine country in the past few years. Next time, perhaps we can find some of these and the other Northern California birds. We passed through in September but we were on a mission to move our son from Alaska to San Diego. He is a biologist now working at the Birch Aquarium of Scripps Institute.

Hi Fred,
I know the best spot on the Bay Area to find these guys- Shoreline Lake from a kayak. And if you are interested on their migration, from mid March to early May and from October and November, large numbers, flock after flock pass offshore.
Next time you are in the Bay Area, e-mail me and I will take you to some of the prime bird destinations.
We both have biologist in our families. My wife is a biologist too.
If you take your son to Costa Rica, I guarantee you he would love it.

Take care my friend.
Yamil

Yamil: Thank you for the kind offer. We would love to see these birds. We took our son to Galapagos but he is much too busy now with a new job. He is working on the water purification procedures that all the coastal California communities and institutions are having to deal with over the next few decades.
