About My friend, Silena. Natural window light.

I'm looking for some serious critiques on this photo. I have shared it in one of my photography groups and posted it in my flickr photo stream and didn't get much of a response from it.

I really, REALLy like this photo. Maybe it is just a personal thing... I don't know! LOL I'm just curious to know why someone would or would not be drawn to it. The only thing that really bugs me about it is the background. I wish it were smoother.

welcome back Melanie, i really miss you when you don't post for a long time...
You're back with what you can do the best: beauty portrait of a beauty person in natural window light!!!!
I like the way the focus is not too much defocused on the second eye.. it give more place and a biggest depth of field...
She has such a dreaming face in this shot, and the sun light is the best for this kind of portrait...
hope you gonna be more present on usefilm
bye

lovely depth and pretty girl Melanie. Well captured.

I like this, but if I may I will make some constructive criticisms that are entirely my personal opinion... I find the shadows on her nose and neck rather too harsh... I wish the light was uniform throughout the image. Also I could lose the highlights on her nose and lips. Perhaps a less glossy lipstick? It might not even be a glossy lipstick, for all I know! Make up is not something I am overly familiar with. Until recently I thought 'mascara' was when something really nasty happened during a war. On the plus side I love the depth of field and the composition... particularly the sweep of her hair.

I agree about the harshness of the shadows. It's hard with natural light sometimes. I wish I had a 3rd hand so I could use my reflector! LOL

As for the highlights, a lot of people tell me that... but I really love those little bits of highlight. That's one of my favorite parts! I guess it's just a matter of preference. I've been told it is not good from a technical aspect, so maybe my taste just isn't very technically pleasing.

Anyhow, thank you for the in depth critique. I appreciate you taking the time!

Melanie, the most important thing is that YOU like what you're doing... everyone is going to have different opinions and tastes! With regards your reflector, you can buy adjustable reflector stands so you can position it precisely and not have to be an octopus. They aren't that expensive... you could probably find a secondhand one.

Melanie Reynolds   {K:9090} 3/30/2007
OoOoO... I'm going to have to look into that. Thank you!

Hi Melanie, since you asked for criticism I'll try to be honest. I think that your portfolio has some excellent pictures, and I especially like the ones with your son...unfortunately this one doesn't do it for me. I would have like it much more if you used a longer lens and moved a few steps to the left so that the left eye would not be so much smaller and out of focus... Again, it's only personal taste, and if you like it then forget any criticism!

Gary Hill   {K:53446} 3/31/2007
Melanie, I like this portrait very much. Like everyone it's a subjective opinion but I like it because a)it's shot with natural light, the shadows might be a little strong but they're only small b) you haven't smoothed out her skin and c) one eye is real sharp (that's usually enough for me) and d) the lips are pretty much in focus and I really like that with portraits of women. I'd also like to echo Patrick's comment about doing your own thing, you'll never please everyone all the time and if you try to come close it's a fair bet your work will (perish the thought)become boring.
Regards, Gary

hi Melanie.....this shot stopped me as I rampaged through critiquers corner looking for magic...it is a lovely, quality portrait that, imao, could benefit from some lighting effects to darken and frame the face of your subject, the look is lovely, longing, enquiring, pure beauty......dof control is super duper....if my copy of ps had not gone walk about I would love to suggest some lighting for you....anyway, you have done good. cheers, david.

I really like the picture. I agree with you on the window light. Takes a while to get the light just right. A little bit darker background than her face maybe. Very nice shot, nice features and good expression. If I was that pretty I would like it...Kerry
