School children in Christian Quarter, Old Jerusalem. Following the 1967 Six-Day War Israel captured East Jerusalem, asserted sovereignty over the entire city, and later in 1980 declared Jerusalem, to be the capital of Israel. However, East Jerusalem has been seen by the Palestinian Arabs as the future capital of a Palestinian state. The status of the city and of its holy places remains disputed to this day.
