About Enjoying the Santa Monica Pier here in Southern California with a couple of other photographers (Rick and Marlyce), I came across this young man, a painter, who is one of a community of volunteers that paint the slate gray cement to make it much more scenic. He agreed to let me shoot him by this section under the bridge that he had painted.

~~GRIN~~...

Oh the shark has pretty teeth dear,
And he shows them pearly white...........

The artist at work... Wonderful, fun candid Doyle... Love the perspective, actually makes me feel a little squiffy ~~GRIN~~...:))) Murals brighten the worlds bland, blank canvases... and if the theme relates to it's surrounds, the more the better for the story they tell...:)))

Excellent Sir...:)))

Onie...

It's heartwarming to see that people care to have the cement slabs somehow beautified! And I enjoy his kind of painting! Not like the grafitti that we get here...ugh! Did you tell him he's going to be on Usefilm?

Good capture of the work in progress, Doyle!
Dave.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 4/25/2007
Yes, and asked permission to shoot him too Yoshiyuki. He only wanted to make it clear he was one of a community of volunteer painters working on this project which goes around the sides on both sides (Didn't want to appear to be taking all the credit for the painting alone). He walked to this section because this section was his own work! :) It merges almost seamlessly as they all seem to be painting with the same style. He was the only painter I saw here on this ocassion though . . .

Thanks Dave!

Nice streetshot full of life, Doyle. The painting really brighten up the surroundings like an oasis almost in between all the concrete.
He paints in a very American way:-) Rather funny that this is often the style I see when Americans paint. I guess we´re much more influenced by our surroundings that we think when we feel original*LOL*
I´m sure you´d a good time and it wasn´t raining!;-)
Take care, Doyle

Tim  Schumm   {K:27167} 4/25/2007
Great shot. as a thumbnail it was tough yet intriguing to see what is going on in the image. It turns out to be visually exciting color wise and despite the unusual composition it works exceedingly well. Glad it took a closer look.

Shirley D. Cross   {K:141852} 4/26/2007
Great find and well shot, Doyle!:)

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 4/26/2007
Thanks Annemette. Nope. No rain. But there WAS a cloud or two in the distance!! LoL!

The style you see here, I think, is uniform and consistent so that a variety of different painters can work on the same image seamlessly. I haven't noted any "American" way of painting myself, but likely that's because I myself paint and others I know who do so have their own unique styles as well . . . (Bet you're not surprised to hear I have my own unique style, eh?). I suspect you'd be pleasantly surprised in reviewing up and coming artist's works in this country; and discover there may not be as much uniformity as you suppose. :)

All the best, my friend!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 4/26/2007
Thanks Tim . . . the corrected distortion from the 10.5mm made this something of a challenge as to composition. I have also a portrait crop which shows more detail but then you lose the setting........and if you include the setting . . . that sky is, clearly, overexposed . . . . Hmmmmmm . . . I'll likely second guess this one for a long time to come!! :P

Thanks very much Shirley!

Michele Carlsen   {K:134273} 4/26/2007
Nice street shot Doyle !!! A very good Artist too IMHO ... what a difference his work makes and the the entire image is so well composed...almost as if you are stepping into another world - I think it's beautiful :) 7/7

Best Regards,
Michele~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 4/26/2007
Thanks very much Michele . . .

Because this was such a wide-angle shot, the composition gave me a bit of a headache . . . you know, what stays and what goes. I have a portrait formatted crop (you know - same shape as above but turned sideways) . . . but you lose the parking and that really anchors the setting. THEN AGAIN . . . you get more painting details ...... with the parking the sky is too bright . . . with the other (sheeeesh) You get what I mean . . . what a bunch of choices needing to be made.

So I'm pleased as punch you like this composition. :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Michele Carlsen   {K:134273} 4/26/2007
Love it Doyle-- You made All the right choices to show both the street and under the bridge All At the Same time :))

Shirley D. Cross   {K:141852} 4/26/2007
You're welcome, Doyle!:)

Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen   {K:55401} 4/26/2007
Dear Doyle
Of course there must be a huge variation in how people paint in the USA when considereing the amount of different people and cultures gathered there.
It´s only that when I see paintings from the USA for some reason it has always been ones like this with vivid colours and often beachmotives and a touch of modern naturalism or whatever to call it.
I´d like to see what you paint, my creative friend:-)

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 4/26/2007
Ahhhhh Annemette. Now I understand completely. In this country wee have similar 'stereotypes' such as the clear evidence that only tulips grow in Holland! We know better . . . but we see the same things all the time. I'll have to send you a photo of one of my paintings. :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
