ahh. a Shakespearean Rose... beautifully composed and color is wonderful as is detail. The fern plant adds to this. Hope you had a great time yesterday at UCLA

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 4/29/2007
Thanks Rick. We DID have fun and will likely be back in a bit today. This event is one of our favorites. We met Dennis Weaver, who autographed his autobigraphy for us, picked up several first edition signed books from Ray Bradbury and several other authors . . . Henry Winkler was there (I photographed all of them) and today will be Julie Andrews and Dr. Phil along with many others.

Believe it or not . . . we go for the books! But Ray Bradbury was looking great this year and I am a bit in awe of his work . . . so that's always a treat!

Quix Photography   {K:20204} 4/29/2007
Beautiful & romantic... love the softness of the background here Doyle & that rose is crisp.. absolutely perfect.

I do love the fern to the right of shot, though you may consider toning it down just slightly so you eye is not taken away from that gorgeous rose.. just my opinion though :)

Hope you are keeping well & bright x :)

He did pass away last year. We saw him at a previous Book Festival (months before he died) and he was SO charming. We were conversing with him and his lovely wife for quite some time. He was also McCloud!

All the good ones do Rick. His wife was cool . . . really stood up for her hubby. I was honored to be able to get so much personal time . . . having watched the filming of Snowtrain in South Dakota and loved his first movie (and Spielberg's) - Duel. She photographed Marlyce and I with him and he autographed his book for us too.

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16383} 5/1/2007
Ladies?...that leaves me out, gentlewomen?...that leaves me out too...friends of ladies?...cool, I qualify for that category...yipee, a dedication...thank you Doyle!

CC image...please don't make me comment on your attire!
First, well composed...I like that you included the fern, maybe tone it down so it does not detract from the rose. Wonderful texture on the upper right petal but, the contrast on the other petal edges is a bit too high and the texture is lost. The black background is perfect...then again, I'm partial to a black BG... :) I'm no expert, heck...maybe I'm all wrong (not likely, I have already been wrong once this year), just my two and a half cents...and still a keeper!

BTW...love that hat with that jacket, smashing...simply smashing! ;)

Take care...Robin

Ardalan Haddad   {K:13901} 5/2/2007
spiral details and shadows have exposed a very great 3d shape of this rose...
and the black colored background as well as that blury green-colored leaves have influenced the overall atmosphier very well, making eyes more into rosy petals...
and indeed there is a very good contrast in between background, leaves and rose...and another thing is that spacing has got a very significant impact on it,means that background and forground are in balance ...and that's how it attracts our attention...and creats a good concentrated focus...

Good on you man...

you do how to do it very great!

All the bests,
Ardalan...

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16383} 5/2/2007
FYI DD...Even though most of your replies were sent to "never-neverland", all 10 of them had a lay-over in my mailbox before continuing their journey. I'm not sure which part of your message(s) tripped the alarm...I saw nothing inappropriate, except maybe the 5-letter word you substituted for "stinks"...*shrug*. Oh, what to do?...I know, write what you want, it ALL gets to the recipient anyway! :)

And thanks!

Take care...Robin

Joggie van Staden   {K:41275} 5/2/2007
Always beautiful! Lovely contrasts Doyle!
Joggie

Ann  Van Breemen   {K:11828} 5/4/2007
Gorgeous colour and love the comp, Doyle, but to me the rose still seems a little soft. Could be just my eyes. Also as someone else has said, maybe darken the fern just a little. Otherwise, beautiful.:)

Yoshiyuki Tanaka   {K:13580} 5/4/2007
Love the quality of the red! Next, the presentation with little green left here and there, so that the flower doesn't look like coming from nowhere! Roses already in bloom????Not yet here, but soon I presume! What are you going to present us, gentlemen, with?????

very good complimentary color combination, the soft lighting makes it look very delicate. Unusual for Peter to have a fern for a leaf..: }
good shallow dof, complexly detailed soft lines of the petals are visible..
nice one Doyle.. regards..

Leonie Fitzpatrick   {K:40299} 5/5/2007

Thanks very much Ardalan! I truly appreciate the lengthy comment and although you 'type with an accent' . . . I mean, clearly translated text . . . your message comes across VERY well. Thanks Bobot! The asparagus fern has more thorns than the roses and aggressively insisted on growing in the same bed . . . so they are mutually self-protective . . . though I do trim the fern when it starts to become less considerate of my roses. :)

This is a beautiful rose Doyle in a very rich and intense red. A difficult colour to capture but you have wonderfully well my friend. The dof is superb and I love the dominant fern alongside the bloom achieving an excellent balance to the composition. Well done to you Doyle.....Cheers my friend......Ray

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 6/13/2007
Thanks ever so much Ray . . . Though I see a few contrary opinions, I increased the chroma on the green channel in the fern range to pull it out a bit more . . . thinking it more a balance for than distraction from the main blossom. As we know too well . . . we have to please ourselves first! :)

Best Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

The delicacy of one rose between the darknesses of the dusk.
It is not easy to give to a good result to the sense of the choreography but in this case six successful good.
