About

Hram Svetog Save

Wikipedia says about Hram Svetog Save that it is the largest Orthodox church currently in use. It is dedicated to Saint Sava (founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church). It dominates the Belgrade cityscape.

It is believed that the location is where the remains of St. Sava were burned by the Ottoman ruler Sinan Pasha. 340 years later, construction of the new church began May 10, 1935 on the design of Aleksandar Deroko and Bogdan Nestorovic. The building of the church is financed exclusively by donations.

Construction ceased during the Nazy occupation of Belgrade and the early structure was used by the invaders as a parking lot; after the war, it served similar purposes until 1985, when it was decided to continue to build the temple taking in consideration new materials and methods.

The 4000 ton central dome, 82 metres high (to the tip of the cross) was built on the ground and took 40 days to lift, it was finally fitted on June 26, 1989.

The structure was mostly finished by 2004; however the inner decorations is largely unfinished.

Thank you dear Biljana... I think that the relative isolation of the Tito era, in a way, protected your heritage, because when there is oppression people tend to value their heritage in a stronger way. I think that it's more dangerous when culture is injected into our brains in a more subtle way, and I believe that it's the way in the Western Hemisphere. The objective here is a homogeneous society; it's very upsetting to see how children are completely adopting the anti-culture of the United States. Hopefully we'll spend more time with our children and instil in them a critical mind as it is the only defence against imperialism.

Many hugs.

Francisco

Thank you for this:)))))
Thank you for show us like people who cares about history and cultural heredity ... in age of communists we must learn how to forget who we are...it was torture on whole people...I was part of that (when I was child...and now I feel something like guilt cause I was part of that processing...without my will or knowledge...)
cause that I try now, like many others to retrieve this ... and rebuild ruins in our church and our souls...
And I feel little named to defend us ...and explain our guilty for our forgetfulness...just that
and thank you for loving this country and this people(...Ok we know the reason:)and very glad for that:))
big hug my friend
Biljana
