:))) First thing I thought of Jan was the Supremes song from late 60's... Reflections... of ... :)))

A real psychedelic soul in this, well according to my era LOL...

Love how you played this... ~~GRIN~~

Excellent dear Sir... Hope Roland is holding up ok?...

Onie...

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 5/19/2007
Onie -- Thanks so much for commenting and it is weird: I thought of the same thing----

Through the mirror of my mind
Time after time
I see reflections of you and me

Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me

Oh, Im all alone now
No love to shield me
Trapped in a world
Thats a distorted reality
........

As for Roland, we still have what looks to be about a one week supply. This morning he licked the gravy from a pouch food (did not eat the food) but that may be a good sign. Unless that works, he will be one very hungry and angry cat in a week or so.
--Best to you, Jan

Thanks, Michele. I was torn between using the original green of the Hostace or converting it; you can see the path I chose.

Hi Jan,

Beautiful color and great post-camera work on this image. Did you use the "ripple" effect plug-in for Photoshop?

Laura

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 5/19/2007
Thanks so much, Laura. I made all adjustments except the ripple in Photoshop CS2. I added the ripple in ULEAD Photoimpact 12, working on the .PSD file transferred from PS CS2.

Interesting artwork Jan, the purple color looks like being from flowers, nice the cirqle like waves you did, the details are very good so looks very natural without lots of pixel 'stairs' on the cirqle shapes.

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 5/20/2007
John -- Thank you for your excellent comments.

All the best,

Thanks, Joe. I appreciate your comment.
I was thinking about you this morning while I was moving my bird feeder to a new location in the back yard. With all your patience and obvious bird expertise I was thinking how great your bird photos are and I can't get my birds to even try my food. No sense in staking out the feeder with the old trusty long lens until I figure out how to get them to sit on the feeder. :) :) :)
Using premium food and the feeder is next to trees well away from the house. I have many varieties, both big and small flying around but none seem to go for the chow.
--Best to you, Jan

Joe Brown   {K:22242} 5/20/2007
Hi Jan,
Thats really odd, sounds like you have all the right ingredients for them to frequent your feeder. Is Roland a house cat? If he is allowed to roam the yard this would likely keep the birds from landing.
Here we have lots of birds at our feeders but our neighbour 2 doors away has a pair of cardinals which almost never venture into our yard??
Another thought, I rarely shoot birds on the feeder, my objective is to catch them on the branches or tree near the feeder. Also, most of my recent shots have been some distance from feeders in the trees behind our property or at nature parks which is a great location to shoot birds as the birds there are far less skittish because of their constant exposure to humans.
You are right it takes a lot of patience. When I see a bird I want to shoot I stop and stand or sit in a strategic location with the light at my back and wait. Usually birds do not stray too far and keep coming back to the same tree or bush. If you stay still long enough they likely will get used to you being there and come back and pose for you.
You say you have a long lens which a key component for good bird shots, I use a 300mm image stabilized lens with a 1.4 teleconverter on a 30D camera with a 1.6 crop sensor which results in equivalent telephoto of more then 600mm. I use a mono-pod with a ball mount to help and steady the camera but you still have to really concentrate to keep the camera very steady and focused on the eye of the bird to get a good sharp shot.
Some thoughts on getting decent bird shots. It's not easy but that's what make it fun and challenging. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Regards,
Joe

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 5/20/2007
Joe -- Thanks so much for the advice and the ideas. My hardware for the camera is a little limited but the telephoto does have a stabilizer. I have a longer lens without and may spring for a teleconverter.
As for Roland, he never goes outside (actually he hates to go out -- go figure). We have no other cats but there are a few strays that travel through the backyard, but not very often (I think I see one a week or so). We used to have a lot of stray cats but that was over a year ago. Perhaps back then the birds marked us as a no-fly zone. They do go on the lawn and eat the seed that falls from the feeder. As for shooting into the trees I have tried that but the foliage is so dense that they are hard to see.
I will maintain patience as you advise but may have to roam about or go to a bird sanctuary to have better results.
Thanks again for the advice -- I really appreciate it.
--Best regards, Jan

This is way cool, Jan. It's not as good as "Fried Egg Over Water" (one of my personal favorites)-- but really creative and nicely realized.

Maryanne

Jan Hoffman   {K:39373} 6/14/2007
Maryanne -- Thanks so much! Looks like I better start thinking of something to top the Fried Egg photo. :) :)
