Actually it does seem a tad harsh although I used a bounce flash with diffuser (notice the source of the light is not straight on them but down from the upper left) . . . this was in a restaurant and the lighting was too harsh for me so I applied a selective vignetting to tone down the background distraction. I think this down toning makes the light on my subject feel more harsh.
Anyway . . . good point to consider! :)

A beautifully caught reaction. Yes, perhaps the light is a little harsh, but it seems to enhance the surprise of the subject, especially against the contrastingly subdued background.

Doyle -- I actually like the effect that you refer to as "harsh". This kind of photo benefits from the "snap" or impact of such lighting and tone; I would not change it in any way. It is a slice of time captured so you can remember this wonderful and amusing moment. Excellent!!!!

charming shot!...he looks like a mature 5yr old and she seems to know how to plant one!...LOL...i like how her skintone came out...being of olive skin myself,i often notice images pulling too much yellow or orange...
per the bounce light being harsh...i think it works here because he is afterall in the "spotlight" per the subject of the comp...
like the lone guy in the BG...and the contrast of skintones....peace,gayle

This is a moment in time... The ones that catch you in an instant... ~~GRIN~~ It's relaxed, cute, full of embarassing humour (to be used at a date in the future) LOL... The look in James eyes is wonderful, the way Cydney has cupped his face, squeezing those boyish pink cheeks as she plants that kiss ~~GRIN~~... These are the shots that stay with us way longer than the studied *Portrait* of now do this, or do that, tilt your head etc... They may be *perfect* as such, but way less true in feeling...:)))
Also love the complete opposites of fair haired and creamy skinned James and melted chocolate hair and nut brown skin of Cydney... :)))
Love it Doyle... They look like a couple of terrific and funny kids to have around...:)))

Thanks Nicole . . . he and his sister Jenna have wonderful blue eyes, as does their father and Marlyce. Apparently a stronger genetic trait in this case, though not usually.
In 15 years he won't be embarassed and may still remember the moment . . . but he MIGHT be embarrased about his "Dennis the Menace" hair! LoL!
