About At sunset on May 6, 2007, a lovely Sun Pillar formed and reflected in the water. On each side, a Sun Dog also formed. In this image only the one on the left is visible. It was such a pretty sight. I hope you enjoy it.
I have included a picture in the Comments section that shows both of the Sun Dogs.
Explanation: Sometimes at sunrise or sunset ice crystals falling from high clouds can form flat, stop sign shaped crystals. The resistance of the air causes them to lie almost flat as they fall. Sunlight reflecting off properly aligned crystals cause the Sun Pillar effect.

Michele, thank you so much for your wonderful comment. You are too kind. I have not posted many images lately as life has been busy. There was not much time for pictures and the ones I took were really not very good. Genius, I am definately not. I was just fortunate enough to be at the lake when this scene occured. Mother Nature did the work. All I had to do was click and crop some. I am pleased that you like it.

Gorgeous shot, and enjoyed reading your "about." This is such a serene landscape, I'd be tempted to place it in the "serenity" project, even after reading the explanation as to why it fits into patterns. But I could be wrong :) Congrats on a beautiful capture -- it is exquisite.

Very serene and contemplative, Mary. Beautiful view and great place!

Del Metheny   {K:25336} 6/3/2007
Mary. I thought the reason you rarely post these days was because you were busy with that beautiful grand child. Now I wonder if it is because you are waiting for something really special before you post. If that is the reason, then you picked a beautiful image to add to your other colorful sky photos. This one is special. Del.

Mary Brown   {K:67759} 6/3/2007
Thank you, Marian. I am complimented by your adding this to your favvoures.

Hi Del. I have been busy with my sweet little grandaughter an a number of other things. Picture taking has not been given near the amount of time I would like. However, we were at the lake for a bit and this lovely scene presented itself. I just had to grab my camera and get some shots.

Gorgeous sunset and lake and so glad to understand exactly what this is, Mary. I still haven't figured out what a sun dog is yet, though I've tried to compare both photos to try and see what you are talking about. It's a term I'm not familiar with.

Mary Brown   {K:67759} 6/21/2007
Hi Dave. The sundog in this picture is faint. If someone is not aware of it, it could certainly be missed. Look to the left side, just above the small patch of pink water surrounded by the dark silhouettes--you will see a bright patch. That is a sundog. In the other picture, they are a little more obvious, although not as evident as they can sometimes be. The sundogs are the bright spots about 22 degrees on either side of the sun.
At sunrise or sunset, when the sun is close to the horizon and it and hexagonal plate-like ice crystals are on the same plane as the viewer, sundogs can be seen. If the flat faces of the ice crsytals are oriented horizontally sunlight is bent on its way to the viewer's eyes producing sundogs. They can be rainbow coloured as the ice crystals refract each colour by different amounts.
They are sometimes called parhelia or mock suns.
I don't know if this is what you wanted. If not, just ask again.
MAry

I give up Mary. They didn't let it post again . . . a 2nd time (first was over a month ago and I just found out it wasn't posted). This time they at least told me. I will try to avoid the intense profanity this time . . . LoL!

Let's see.

Nice shot (I like)
Thanks for the info (very cool)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Mary Brown   {K:67759} 9/4/2007
Doyle, you are persistent. Hopefully, my pictures do not make you swear so you get cut off for profanity. ;-)) I always appreciate hearing from you.

John Hatz   {K:138159} 9/20/2007
Amazing....oh my God...that cannot be water...that must be ice, or oil, it cannot be so waveless, so perfect freezed texture, and so the reflections are increadible, already you have some silhouettes of rocks and woods that adds a lot to the composition and a magic sky, oh my, that is one of the most peacefull photos I ever seen before Mary, to my favs!

Mary Brown   {K:67759} 9/20/2007
Hi John. You leave such thought out comments each time. I do appreciate the time you take. I am flattered that you have added this to your favourites. That evening was wonderfully still and the Sun Pilar caught everyone's attention. It was such a glorious scene. Me and my camera moved around taking pictures from a number of angles hoping to get a decent composition. This is the one I liked the best. Although, how can one go wrong with a display like this from Mother Nature?
MAry

John Hatz   {K:138159} 9/20/2007
dear Mary, when a shot has something to...tell me than I have to write some thoughs more...if not....just a couple of words...and I'm very sorry about my english...very bad and many times I cannot write my thoughs... lol...with 300 words that I know...hehe...well there are many people that can do wrong even with a so great place...for excample I could be at a place like that and I could also left my camera back home hahahaha!
Hugs!

Robert Chin   {K:20082} 9/29/2007
