About Fun with Filters!! Not plug-ins - color filters. Rina offered some suggestions which I considered (and a few I tossed) to come up with this second version. The closer crop she suggested went over well with me, as did the vignetting.

I returned to the original RAW image and noted her beautiful blue eyes and - recalling a few people have been asking me about color filters and their use for B&W, I thought this would be a great way to demonstrate an example. Instead of orange, a blue filter has been applied and the tones have been subtly altered . . . darkened in some areas and lightened in others (not by me but by the filter). . . but the closer view here and the blue filter enhances her eyes (IMO). I also selectively increased the BG blur and darkened it with a huge 150 px feather . . .

So thanks to Rina . . . here is version II.

Doyle:)
This is very interesting work. Great expression.Softly, but strongly. Eyes - they are excellent.
Warm hugs:)
Viola

This is super adorable.. she reminds me of my little cousin.
Well taken!!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/9/2007
Thanks Viola . . . initially I rejected the blue filter because it makes for darker, more gritty images (IMO) but the thought of what it would do to the eyes is what made me give it a shot! Always appreciate the comments! :)

Thanks Randee . . . aren't they cute? :)

Thanks Jason . . .

Every now and then, Rina has a good idea. :P

Rina had a fantastic idea; really has a lot of impact and the selective effect of the filter makes a big difference. You application of vignette is very, very subtle and I am curious how you wrestled control over it. What method did you use to get the vignette? And of course Jenna is the Pout Master (or is that Mistress?) -- in any event it does not hurt any to have one who is such an artist in the pout expression arena.
Love this one, Doyle.
--Regards, Jan

Rina     {K:26519} 8/9/2007
Ohhhh... this is raw. The expression becomes all the more gripping when everything else fades away. Nothing but this child staring directly into your soul... You did good Doyle, real good.

Yeah, every now and then I say something useful eh? ;P But it's easy when the images are already great to begin with. You don't really need my suggestions, but I'm flattered you took some on board *blush*

Ok, so when can I expect the cheque?

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/9/2007
Rina Sweetie . . . my credits good . . . I mean the check is in the mail . . . I mean . . . I owe you! Thanks so very much for the kind words yet again! Every now and then you DO say something useful . . . the rest of the time you seem to say nice things about me! :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/9/2007
Thanks Jan . . . I used a unique selection tool in the NX program that allows for a lot of control and simply feathered heavily and darkened - Gaussian blurred with emphasis on the perimeter.

fotogr@vi     {K:52910} 8/10/2007
Came out much more intense.. plus, the grains also work very well, IMO !!!

Good job, Doyle !!!

Cheers

Riny Koopman   {K:59777} 8/10/2007
She's definitely bored, but she's got something serious on her mind too... excellent candid capture Doyle. Nice fine detail and good exposure control..My vote from the Netherlands is 8++

Riny

Thanks so much Shirley. I've been blessed with beautiful grandchildren . . . beauty soon to become a curse to their parents no doubt! Ahhhhh . . . there is a certain tranquility in knowing that any difficulty raising kids gets paid back to them as they raise their own! ( snicker )..... ;)

Thank you very much Fabrice . . . though many have said otherwise from time to time . . . honest critiques listened to with open minds do help us on this site . . . and this second version of Jenna is a perfect example! I appreciate your comment and feedback!

NN     {K:26787} 8/10/2007
This is definitely an improvement, Doyle ... her eyes really shine! Good work!

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16434} 8/10/2007
You know I didn't think you could improve the first post, well, wait...I did agree with Rina on the background but, the rework has made it even better Doyle. The blue filter, along with the tighter crop, did enhance those compelling eyes...brought out more detail/light. Didn't think you could improve that wonderful light either but, you did. All in all, a BEAUTIFUL portrait...one to be very proud of my friend!

Thanks for the demo, useful info to store in my already crowded memory bank. ;)

Take care...Robin

Robin Wickenkamp   {K:16434} 8/10/2007
This rating system boggles my mind! When I started my comment you were at a 6.88...gave you a well deserved 7 and now you're at 6.58...WTF? :(

Oh yeah, came back to take this to my favorites also!

Shadi Porooshani   {K:9997} 8/10/2007
i love her look
so sweet face & indeet your good shot

Thanks very much Elisa! :)

John Hatz   {K:144327} 8/10/2007
that is samely great with the last, personaly I like that better as the darker background makes the photo looks more...like a studio portrait.
Excellent is the soft shadow sceles roundly to her face and solders, and how the bottom area of her face cover the shadow on her neck (something that is not nice to see anyway)
the result is excellent again Doyle!
Best regards!

Robert Gaither   {K:29674} 8/10/2007
Looks fine. I don't know if you have CS3 or not but wow you can really tweak black and white images with that. Excellent portrait and rework.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/10/2007
Thanks again Robin . . . I'm pretty certain you know all that stuff already anyway . . . though I have had several requests for info about color filters and their effect on B&W. I really thought this would be to . . . uhhh . . . well Rina's term works . . . Raw . . . a harsh effect not befitting this wonderful lil angel . . . but having tried it it seemed so compelling I had to admit I was lucky to have Rina send me back to the original for another look. Normally, street captures and city shots would benefit this blue filter . . . not people . . . then again . . . maybe I should be more open to alternate possibilities.

Incidentally . . . I think it's better to have a crowded memory bank than an empty one, eh?

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/10/2007
LoL! Come on Robin! You're not supposed to be able to figure out the rating matrix -- if you do . . . they COME for you! . . . Not to worry though . . . I'll take the noose down from the rafters since it was clearly a mistake! LMAO!!! I'd rather have kudos from fine photogs anyways . . . and honored you made it a fav! Then again . . . just looook at her! :)

Thanks Robert. I use PS Elements 4 at times but in this case only for the frame. Conversion from Raw and to B&W was using CaptureNX . . . a Nikon software program. Usually, I use the program most likely to provide me with the best tool to acheive my goal . . . hence the NX conversion (RAW & B&W) as well as the PSE4 for the frame. Appreciate the comment.

Doyle I <~~~~~

Michele Carlsen   {K:133883} 8/10/2007

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99839} 8/10/2007
Hmmmm . . . seems unanimous per the version preference. I guess the impact IS a tad stronger. I get dizzy as I work her shots . . . each version or step in a conversion always looks SO good to me . . . Anyway, I'm always glad to have your opinion - you know that! :)
