About During last night's storms, I had gone directly to the heart of it. My goal was to use my wide angle for full-frame catches. Because of the intense rain, not to mention intense lightning, I had to stay in my truck and handhold my camera during 2 second exposures.

Most of the lightning captured was striking within 2 to 5 miles of my location. But in this strike, the center strike hits the mesa about a mile away. The right strike was so close, you can see the tree it hit (bottom right corner). I would say this is within 1000-1500 feet of me. Remember, this is with the 10-20 wide angle set to 20 MM.

This shot was so bright that it lit up the falling rain to the point where the photograph was terribly speckled. I cleaned it up.

The only cropping was to the left side of the photo. You are seeing a full top-to-bottom image.

There were other shots where the lightning hit even closer than this but the light was so intense, the exposures were ruined. talk about drama!

2 second exposure, hand-held camera.

Bernardo, thanks, but please don't mention National Geo to my mother, she bugs me constantly about calling them. LOL.

(and she would freak if she knew about my lightning shots)

Best,
Dave

What an amazing story! It hit me when you said you were shooting 20mm just how close all this WAS. WOW.

Carlen Schmidt   {K:7061} 9/2/2007
Yikes, well I'm glad you didn't get hit by the lightning!

You must have been holding your camera very steady to do this handheld.

Great photo. :)

Dave Arnold   {K:55654} 9/2/2007
Thanks, Brigitte!

Best wishes,
Dave

Thanks, Carlen. My biggest problem is not holding the camera steady... it is the 135 pound Great Dane in the backseat that rocks the truck just with breathing... LOL

Best wishes,
Dave
